For those of you planning on visiting the Arizona Memorial, you cannot take purses, backpacks, diaper bags, camera bags, in short nothing that could conceal a weapon etc into the memorial. This includes the building where you view the film before boarding the launches out to the memorial. There is nothing available at the memorial to store these items. For a complete list visit the Park Service web site, hope I get this right [url]http://www.nps.gov/usar/index.htm[url]. I understand these restrictions also apply to the Bowfin and the USS Missouri.
We were there in February and we were prepared for this, somewhat.
After touring the USS Arizona Memorial and museum, we bought a few things, which were put in bags. We next went to the USS Bowfin, but had to check the bags (no charge) before we could board the sub. After completing that tour, we bought a few more items then went to get on the trolley to take us to the USS Missouri. We were surprised to learn that there are no bags allowed on the trolley, either. We had to remove all items from the bags (save them in your pcokets), and hold them in our hands or put them in our pockets. After boarding the Missouri and taking in the sights, we stopped at their gift shop and bought a couple more things - and they put them in bags.
When I asked about the items being in bags, I was told that this only applied to boarding and once on board it was OK to have bags. Everything now went into the USS Missouri bags and the bags from our pockets, which made for easier carrying, and we did not have any problems for the rest of the tour.
So it appears the only time you must actually remove the items from the bags and carry them is from the time you board the trolley until after you board the Missouri. However, this assumes you do the tours in that order.
You can buy a reduced price combo ticket to do the Bowfin and the Missouri at the Bowfin site.
