local transportation

Do I have to rent a car in Kona or is there local transportation (busses, shuttles) to Muana Kea and other beaches 30 miles north of Kona. On Maui, is it possible to take a shuttle from Lahaina north to beaches like Kapalua? Thanks!

I would definitely rent a car if you can. The Big Island doesn't have a good transportation system.......... Great Island and extremely beautiful, but it's best if you have your own car!

We will be on the Vision in September and plan to rent cars in all the ports. We also plan to visit kapalua as it is our favorite snorkel beach on Maui. I don't remember any public transportation on Maui except cabs and the sugar cane train.

On Maui and Kona, best bet is to rent a car. Public transportation is almost nonexistent except for an occasional taxi. Driving on the Islands is extemely easy, almost(notice I said almost) impossible to get lost. Confused perhaps but not lost. Even on the big Island, just head north or south and eventually you will come back to where you started. On Maui you can't go the whole way around the island(without violating your rental agreement) so eventually you will have to turn around. Car rental agencies give you these neat maps, very easy to follow, make great souveneirs, with lots of coupons to save you money if you spend money.
