My hubby and I are contemplating a cruise to Hawaii; we'd like to go from San
Francisco or from Ensenada to Honolulu and cruise the islands. Based on your
experiences, which cruise line appears to do the best in introducing the islands
to their passengers? We also plan to spend a few days in Honolulu post cruise.
I would appreciate your knowledge as cruising in this area of the world would
be a new experience for us; we are experienced cruisers in the Caribbean and
have been on NCL, Carnival, Holland America and will be sailing on Celebrity's
Horizon in January 2004 to the Caribbean.
Please respond with your thoughts! Thanks in advance!
I can only relate our own cruise experience. We flew into Honolulu 3 days early, rented a car, did some sightseeing and that was the best thing we could have done. Then, we got on the Celebrity Infinity, which we found to be head and shoulders above any other cruise we have taken. Any Hawaii cruise will typically stop for one day (8am-6pm) in Kauai, and Kona, on the big island. Maui is usually an overnight stay (don't miss the Old Lahaina Luau!!) . we only spent 1/2 day in Hilo, but yours will be different because you are going in the other direction.
Bottom line: you can't do much better than Celebrity lines. Maybe you can get a better price on a different line, but, to us, any extra cost was worth it
We are scheduled to go in October on the Carnival Spirit. We loved the
the fact we have quite a bit of time in the ports. We will sail back to Ensenada.
Looking forward to the 5 sea days at the end to totally relax after our port days.
We have done quite a bit of cruising and this is just our opinion, but we cruised with NCL Wind in January 2003, this is one i would 'NOT recommend. I could go into detail about how the other ships are better and if you are interested email, but I'm sure you would not be sorry with Celebrity , Royal Caribeean or Holland America would be a far better choice.
Depends on whether you want a quiet, low key trip or a more active, lots of people and partying cruise. We prefer Holland America for the quiet, low key trips. You might want to check out Norwegian Cruise Lines - -starting next July, they will be sailing under the American flag, and can therefore forego the "foreign port" requirements. There is a wonderful itinerary for the Pride of America. Check it out.
By the way, the Pride of America does have a repositioning cruise next June (6/20/04), which cruises from San Francisco, does the islands, and ends in Honolulu. It sounds like just what you are looking for - extra added bonus: It's a brand new ship! We will be on that one!
We have just decided to book our Hawaii cruise next Monday with our TA! The
cruise we chose will be Celebrity's Infinity on 5 December 2004 for a 15 day
roundtrip from San Diego! The prices are just right and I am really excited
about returning to Hawaii! I was just 13 years old the last time I was there
(it will be 42 years ago by the time we sail) and I just know I will have tears
of joy when I see the Aloha Tower! It will be my husband's first trip to Hawaii!
What a year we have to look forward to after having a horrible 2003 thus far!
