My husband wants to take his mother to Hawaii because she has always dreamed of going and is afraid to leave the United States so other tropical destinations are out of the question.
Here is my dilemma, My husband and I do not enjoy being around lots of people and social events but this is exactly what makes my MIL happy. In fact the more fuss the better. I don't want to go to a resort unless it is all-inclusive because my MIL would not feel comfortable ordering food if she saw the prices. We have 3 children currently ages 8, 10 and 12. We do not watch televison or do Nintendo, nor do we drink alcohol or gamble so the primary activities advertised by the cruise lines are not interesting. My kids do not eat hamburgers or hot dogs or other kid menu items often. In fact when we went to Club Med for two weeks they did not even know they were available for the first week. They would rather eat frog's legs. The good news is that I do play bridge and would kill to be on a good bridge cruise. We also love outdoor sports like rock climbing (on real rock, not just climbing walls) , kayaking, smorkeling, etc... My MIL is not in very good physical condition and does not enjoy these things.
The huge question is are there any cruise lines that have activities for children that are more interesting than teen disco and casinos? A cruise without a kid program would be fine since my kids are used to entertaining themselves and are very responsible. Are there cruises that simultaneously cater to people who love razzle dazzle and Las Vegas style shows as well as those who would prefer and more international experience? We are multi lingual and have lived outside the United States. My MIL thinks anything outside of Idaho is exotic. Pleas let me know what you think.
later this year Norwegian cruise Lines is going to be offering cruises in Hawaii on new ships that sail only within the Hawaiin Islands. Any new modern cruise ship would probably meet your requirements. You don't have to gamble to enjoy yourself on a cruise ship, We don't gamble and have enjoyed 12 cruises. Freestyle dining will allow you to pick and choose the cuisine you like and who you want to dine with.
No one says your kids have to eat "childrens " food, there is no reason they cannot eat the most sophisticated food on the menu if that is what they enjoy.
No one forces you to drink on acruise. There are tons of activities that don't involve drinking or gambling and the best activity of all is finding a quiet corner and being left alone. The best part of any cruise is that all are available.
I have never been on a cruise where there weren't a group of folks getting together for bridge.
Bottom line, a cruise would probably meet all your requirements for Kids, Self, Spouse and MIL.
