Default Pearl Harbor-Security

I read the US Govt website with all that you can not take or wear to the USS Arizonia. One of them was a money belt.

Does anyone know if a money wallet that you wear around your neck and under your shirt is OK? I read in Frommers the pickpockets are very bad there.

Based on the same posting you saw--we decided not to go there--just too inconvenient.

We just got back from hawaii. If you want to see Pearl Harbor just pack light! No camera bags allowed or purses. We had our cameras in our hands and money in our pockets alnog with id and credit card. My son had his room key around his neck and nothing was said. It was not a big hastle. We locked our belongings in the car trunk and all went well. Money wallets around the neck were ok. That is what my son had! Everything ran smooth and efficiently!

Wow they must have cracked down in the past year. I was just there in March 2004 and they didn't care about purses, my friend brought hers. They did say that no large bags were allowed, so no diaper bags, etc.

Word of advice, get there EARLY to get a ticket for the tour, otherwise you will be waiting forever.

Please take this tour as it is well worth the time. It will be something that will never leave you. It is a moving experience.

What is bad there is folks leaving stuff in their cars and having the cars broken into. Leave the big stuff at home or lock it in the trunk BEFORE you park (so someone isn't watching you lock it up). There is also a place where you can go to check your stuff.
If you are on the island of Oahu this is a MUST SEE / MUST DO. Get there very early. It is free, but first come first served for tickets .What are the tickets to? They are to a short , very moving video presentation and the boat ride out to the memorial. You can walk the grounds and the Museum area while waiting for your assigned group to be called. Some nice photo ops. Bring camera, not camera bag.

If you do this tour via one of the cruise excursions, do you have all the same issues - no purses, camera bags, etc.? Can you leave your things on the bus - and is that safe?

We did this tour w/the ship and the bus driver did let us leave all our stuff on the bus and he did say that he would not leave it unattended. Seeing as we were there for at least 2 hrs, it was pretty nice of him. Don't know if he stayed the whole time or not, but all our stuff was all there when we returned.

Having looked into it some more, we decided we will take the ship's tour, travel with just the camera or take a cardboard one & will leave any other items in the tour bus while we do Pearl harbor-- Upon relection , It would be wrong to go there & not see one of the most important locations in our country's history...despite any inconvenience.....
