Default Shore Excursions necessary?

Hello!

This will be our first Hawaiian cruise and was wondering if there is anything close to the ports of Hilo,Kona,Nawilli,Honolulu, Lahaina?
Or do you have to take a shore excursion to see anything.
(This is our 11th cruise, so we are familiar with being on our own.)

Also, would like to experience a beach, any suggestions for these ports?

Many thanks!
Carolyn B

Default Re: Shore Excursions necessary?

We found that it was cheaper, simpler, and easier to rent a car, and go out and explore on our own. We did this for all the ports except Hilo, where we had a really short stay (8:30am - 2pm).
We could decide to do something, change our minds on a whim, see something interesting while driving by and explore (we saw the IO Valley on Maui this way). Stop and eat where and when we wanted to
Hawaii offers the unique opportunity of being exotic and very domestic at the same time, ie, stop at WalMart to pick up film or toothpaste.
