Anyone been to Pitcairn Island? My cruise ship Crystal Serenity is scheduled to call there next year. Did you spend your time talking with residents, have a guided tour or find a sandy beach for swimming. We only have 4 -5 hours there if the ship actually gets to make the port call. I understand that a scheduled stop at Pitcairn Island may be cancelled for foul weather.
If you do a little research you will find that Pitcairn Island is basically a big rock. No beaches or accessable shoreline to speak of . No port or docks. The only industryies are bee keeping and some forestry. Biggest island industry is sale of stamps to collectors and handicrafts to visitors. There are no paved roads. Many of the "natives" are in fact decendents of the Bounty mutineers who landed there.
Liam, Fletcher Christian was the leader of the mutineers. He sailed the Bounty to Pitcairn Island then burned it so the mutineers could not go back to Tahiti or the other south seas islands.
There wasn't even a McDonald's on the island or even a Wal Mart.
The other reason for burning the ship was so that the British Navy would not find them. If the Bounty had been spotted anchored offshore the British Navy would have brought the mutineers back to England and hanged them.
