Renting cars in Kauai and Maui

We are sailing into Nawiliwili, Kauai and Kahului, Maui

Four of us are booked on the Pride of Aloha the end of April. We are thinking about renting a car on each island for the day we are there.

I would appreciate suggestions on rental companies, how they handle the pick up/drop off and if it is worth the extra cost to keep it until the next morning. What time do you have to be back on the ship before sailing on the second day?

Is it faster to take a cab to the airport to get the car or do the companies come to the ship? Is a 4-wheel drive necessary or should we splurge on a convertible?

These may sound like dumb questions but I have never been to Hawaii before and I know it is different if you are coming off a ship as opposed to flying in and staying for a week.

Car rentals are easy and cheap and you don't need a four wheel drive.

don't have your answer but can tell you Kauai is very easy to drive around
