Default Garlic, your new best friend:):)

Magnolia, I would have to say, I do really see a difference. Why this works, is a mystery, but, my nails are indeed stronger. For those, who have no idea, what Magnolia, and I are talking about..

A beauty segment on tv, said to dice up a bit of garlic and add to clear nail polish. They say your nails will be as hard as acrylics, and the garlic odor will disipate a few minutes after polishing. [It does.] Try it, and see if it works for you..

Now you just gotta wonder, what in the world would make a person put garlic in their nail polish to start with?

Glad to hear it works. Next time I take off my acrylics I'm gonna try this. My poor nails are so weak, anything would be an improvement.

I'm wondering, too, Magnolia.

Was someone polishing their nails and eating Italian food at the same time? Can you hear it - "Hey, I wonder what would happen if I put GARLIC in my nail polish??"

Go figure...

Does the smell really go away, Trip?

How often do you apply this garlic nail polish. Do you have to use it every day? Or just once a week or so? Sounds interesting.

Cleo, you can use it as a topcoat over polish, or when you just want naked nails, use it as a clear coat, as often as you want.

Thanks for the tip--I'm willing to try almost anything on my poor nails. I developed an allergy to formaldehyde after wearing acrylics for a few years and, after a year, they finally grew back but they split and break like crazy. But, I'm just really glad to have nails again.

Default wait a sec... doesn't that mean you'll have lumpy polish?

I can just see these little bits of garlic floating around on your nails!

I've got to try this!

My brother loves garlic, so his father-in-law gave him a can of garlic flavored spray oil for Christmas one year. My crazy bro sprayed it on himself as perfume!

I'm sure he smelled very fresh...

.. my luck I'd be painting my nails and a piece of the garlic would get on them and harden...

It has just occurred to me that a bonus to this garlic polish may be vampire protection. A girl just can't be too careful nowadays.

Trip, how much do you add to a bottle of polish? Do you use the pre-minced garlic in a jar?

I just chopped up a clove and dropped some of it in. The bottle cannot be full, to allow for the garlic...I used the fresh, simply because it was unadulterated.

one week update:
When I removed my old polish this time, I didn't have the peeling going on as I usually do, which is a wonderful sign!

week three update:

very little, if any, peeling or splitting. I'm even getting growth on the nails that always split and tore before they reached the end of my finger. This is so strange but I swear it seems to be working!

week four:

I'm getting giddy. the areas on my nails that that are indented from the splitting have now grown out to almost the tips of the nails--by the next manicure they should be gone! All of the new growth looks really healthy. I'll never have healthy cuticles again because of the acrylics but at least my nails are doing great!

Well, I was just perusing some of the past threads and found this gem, uh spice, uh....

Anyway, I'm going to try it. I was at the nail salon every other week for 16 years before taking the nails off about a year ago. Just this week I feel like my nails are FINALLY getting a little stronger. Still not much length to them, but they aren't breaking as badly or splitting.

Now I go for manicures every week (look at the money I'm saving by not getting the acrylic nails ). I decided that if my cuticles looked good, that was half of it. Since my nails are short, I haven't been using polish, I just have the technician buff them.

I will let you know if they grow better!
