Default Galapagos Islands

My school is thinking of having a joint spanish/science field trip in the summer of 2006 (a long way away, I know) to Quito, Ecuador and then on a cruise to the Galapagos Islands. The cruise will be about 8 nights and we will spend 2 nights in Quito. They won't tell us what cruise line or anything. Does anyone know anything about Galapagos Island Cruises? Has anyone ever been on one?

I was just reading about them.. we learned about them in Bio and my teacher said he was thinking about taking a cruise there to see the "Finches" haha yeah but the ships that I know of that go there are:
Glapagos Tours & Cruises - http://www.galapagos-inc.com/ - mostly smaller ships
Also, Celebrity does cruises to the Galapagos Islands on the Celebrity Xpedition which is used for small islands in South America, The Arctic and racing.. The ship capacity is only about 96 to 98 passengers though. If you want a brochure, you can download one on their website.. (www.celebrity.com) For this cruise, the prices start at around $2000 so it wont be really cheap, and if you want the website for the Galapagos Cruise its http://www.celebrity.com/filterpage....2CAD2584&loc=1
You can also Google Glapagos Island Cruises and they show you different lines that have cruises around the islands.. Hope that helped!

I believe the most popular ship to the Galapagos is the 80 passenger Polaris. It's funny you ask because I was just reading about it in the National Geographic Tours magazine. It was also the best adventure cruise on the travel channel on Cruise Week a few weeks ago. I'm not sure about a website, but I'm sure you'd find one if you searched.

Isn't the POLARIS pretty old? For 3000 dollars (including airfare I think?), the Celebrity Xpedition seems more likely.

Also, Glapagos Tours & Cruises doesn't offer 8 nights cruises, but Celebrity Xpedition does.

I'm not sure. I don't know too much about it, although I know the Travel Channel liked it, if that means anything.

Thanks Ben and Wayne! I saw Polaris on the Travel Channel and I couldn't remember what ship it was. The price isn't final yet, considering we're going summer 2006! But from the research I've done, the ships are all around the same size (100 passengers) and have the same things on them (not much of anything). I think the real excitement of this cruise is going to be the Galapagos themselves, and being with friends from school. If anyone has anymore tips, though.....they'd be greatly appreciated.

Yes the Galapagos Islands is a real paradise treat. The local governments are really strict on the amount of visitors coming in therefore the small ships.

Yup, as Wayne said they limit the visitors to 50,000 a year..
Theres one more ship, one of the main ships to the Galapagos Islands, the Galapagos Explorer II, 100 passengers.

Yep GALAPAGOS EXPLORER II was a former luxury yacht for the now-bankrupted Rennaissance Cruises. Built in 1990 I think?

Bringing up the goaplalas islands.... Why dont any big mega ships or at least decent sized 39,000 to 6,000 go to the goapolos islands.Kid trust the celebrity xpiditon is a small small ship and so is the polaris and gouaplas explorer too so bring see bands. Expect a good time. but dont expect any rockclimbing walls,10resturaunt a 3 something pools. Expect a very adventurous trip lets just say and rough waves like 20-30ft on that ship pray for your life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats because the Galapagos government wants to "preserve" their little island and control the number of passengers that can come per year....

Adding to what Wayne said, the larger ships are too large to go to the smaller islands. The smaller the ship, the more remote places you can go to.
