with larger cruise ships holding more people going to more remote ports of call, do you think that poses new risks to the safety of the ship and those on board?
(at a SNAME [society of naval architects and marine engineers] conference in providence, rhode island, i attended a technical paper presentation about this)

Safety of the ship, no; ships are constantly being updated with newer and safer technologies (see www.oasisoftheseas.com and click on "Expecting the Unexpected" for a little look at ways Oasis of the Seas (the world's current record-holder for size), has developed safety precautions to deal with the abnormally larger crowds.
Safety on land is a different issue altogether. Is it more dangerous to flood a remote island with a group of tens of thousands? Yes. More people means bigger crowds, more likely to push and shove or to create problems with the locals, both safety risks.
Do you think that it is practical to continue on the "bigger is better" mentality in the cruise industry?

negative. but thats my opinion. im honestly content with the conquest class and not any bigger. the dream is a nice ship no doubt but i would still be really skeptical going on it because of its size. oasis is just too big for my taste but once again my opinion.
same?

You gotta keep in mind that the larger the ship, the less ports it can visit. I'm not just talking about ports of call either. The biggest ships these days I believe only barely clear the Verazzano Bridge in New York. Ships in size will hit a breaking point where land based infrastructure will be unable to handle the crowding, either the shops, bars, beaches, or even the terminal at the ports of call, or the transportation and supplies back at home (I remember the congestion Voyager of the Seas caused on the Jersey Turnpike, and Princess ships cause on the BQE). What's easier for the Port of Miami, parking for 3000-4000, or up to 10000 guests.
Also I imagine many people just not wanting to be on a ship that big and surrounded by that many people.
