Default Princess? =/

My mom's looking at a Mexican Riviera cruise on the Star Princess for April vacation of 2010. I've only sailed on the larger RCI ships and I'm not sure about going on Princess. What are the major differences (besides the obvious rock wall, flow rider, etc..)?

Any other info on Princess as far as the teen programs and stuff??

Oh, and I'll be 17 by then if that makes a difference.

Princess (as of the last time I was on) was actually a fairly good line. It had the partying aspect of Carnival, but a bit higher class. Star Princess is a fairly large ship (110,000 tons), but feels like a 70,000 ton boat once you're aboard. The restaurants are all single-story restaurants and are located in different areas of the ship, and you do have the freedom of choosing when to eat.
As far as the teen program, I have heard that it has lost its quality since I last went on a Princess cruise (again, I cannot confirm this as I haven't sailed Princess in three years). You do have a teen club, but you're in an age group of 13 to 17 which may or may not be a problem depending on how mature those younger teens are.
Other major differences:
Star Princess has a large movie screen (as opposed to none on RCCL)
Star Princess has been renovated (due to a large fire that burned up much of the upper three decks midship)
Princess cruise line has no curfew
Princess as a whole tends to have better service and better food.

teen club = boring.
I went on the Crown Princess when it was brand new! I met tons of teens who I still miss, but there was nothing to do on the ship. The teen club was horrible..over taken by little kids...and at night when it was the teen dance you couldn't grind or anything. Me and my friends just chilled in someones cabin or out on the deck.

The food is really good though. I like the big movie screen, where they have MUTS. Although I have to disagree with Mike on the service, rudest crew I have ever met. I only met one really nice one and he was really hot too haha!

I guess its your own preference like my mom and brother like princess more then rccl but then I would pick rccl over princess any day.

I'm going to go ahead and say it varies by ship then, because we we're definitely allowed to grind when I went on. And service outstripped RCCL by miles and miles. But like I said, varies by ship and crew.

it can be like that on any line though. not just rccl and princess. the crew on the ship is what makes the difference.

thanks everyone for the info.
my moms going on princess for her first time next month, so this all depends on how she likes it then.

the other option for this week in the mexican riviera on mariner of the seas. i'd much rather do that, but hey, as long as i'm on a cruise instead of home i can't be too picky!

i'll let u know if what we end up booking

I was on the same ship as Devon the same summer, Crown Princess, during it's first year. The teen program was horrible. The staff was downright cruel I thought, the programs were extremely boring. The short British woman was the worst. And complaining about her to the info desk, or after the cruise to Princess was like complaining to a brick wall. I would stay away from Princess if I were you. On the other hand, Carnival is amazing. I recommend Carnival to anyone looking to cruise. I know Carnival owns Princess, but the parent company (Carnival) is just so much better.

I would LOVE to go on Carnival, but my mom has it stuck in her head that it's one big party ship with bad service.

It looks like we're going on Princess as of now, because the adults i'm going with say i'll be 17 and won't care about the teen program anyways - yeah right! that'll be my last year for it & i deffinitly want to enjoy it while i can. so i'm trying really hard to go on Mariner of the Seas since thats the only other option.

I thought the Carribean Princess teen program was pretty cool better than the Carnival Triumphs to be down right honest. I actually was let down by the Triumph's 02. Princess ships really dont have much to do on them other than the teen joint, the pools, MUTS and if your lucky the athletic court so dont be expecting much. Hopefully your cruise wont be an old people festival like my previous Princess cruises but hey the only thing they slowed me down was tendering and the buffet line. The found is really outstanding though on Princess and the boats are always clean. Your mom needs to change her stereotype of Carnival they actually have some of the nicest ships afloat and their service is starting to catch up with the rest of the pack if not surpassing some such as NCL for sure.

hey! i've been on the Star Princess 2 years ago. i've also been on the caribbean princess. besides, the princess line i've sailed with noriegan so i can't really speak on the differences between Princess and Royal Caribbean but I do have a friend whose been on both. she likes both lines, but prefers royal caribbean a tad bit more (younger crowd = more parties). when i went with her on the star princess two years ago, we were basically the only teens on board. there were only 4 teens signed up at the teen club!!!! that really disappointed us, but you have to keep in mind our cruise was in the beginning of November when most kids were at school (our school had a weird fall break). In April, you might have better luck cause a lot of kids have spring break then. I don't think Princess is normally that bad though. Cause this summer I went on Caribbean Princess, and there was a shitload of teens on board...like hundreds lol. so i think it all depends on the timing of your trip. just in case though, see if you can bring a friend with you on your trip that way if it is a senior citizen cruise you got someone to hang with lol. but i promise, its most likely not gonna be like that.

as for entertainment, we were old enough on the caribbean princess to go to the adult night club which is a BLAST. but i hear the teen club was just as much fun. theres all these shows. there's this comedian named sarge who was both on the star princess and the caribbean when i went, and hes SOOOOO funny. you gotta see him =) but yeah, id reccomend princess. ive always had so much fun. and its always cool to try a new line.
