Default i have a problem.

i've come to realize i have a slight cruise obsession problem, lol.

this kid that i never used to talk to much in one of my classes mentioned he's going on his first cruise next week for winter break. i immediatly found out the ship and since then i've been shooting out information left & right. i've told him what to do on each island, how to go on cruisecritic & here, all the ships that will be in ports with him and all about those ships, what the teen programs are like (from what i've read here) and a whole bunch of other stuff.

anyway, he's going on norweigan dawn, leaving for miami tomorrow. any last minute info i can give him since i've never been on NCL? thanks!

Hey cruiseaddict- what’s up

I think I may be able to answer your question. I've been on NCL 7 times and the Dawn four times. So I'll try and offer some info and suggestions I can think of.

First off, one thing that is important to note about NCL is their concept of Freestyle Cruising. Unlike other cruise lines, on NCL there is no assigned seating time and you can choose from a restaurant and go there when you wish. On the Dawn, if I remember correctly, there are 11 different restaurants. Four of these restaurants have no cover charge (Aqua, Venetian, and Impressions) If you want you can always go to the buffet up till about 11 o’clock. There is a 24 hour restaurant called the Blue Lagoon on the Dawn offering fast food. It’s basically a grill and you can eat outside, there or although few people know you can ask for it to go and they will wrap it up for you. Its a great place to hang out. As far as the shows go, there is one at 7:30 and another at 9:30. If you want to go to the show you will need to allow enough time to eat first because with freestyle cruising they don’t plan the shows out based on seating times. Also if you don’t want to wait long for a table you shouldn’t go to the dining rooms at the busy times (again, with freestyle its hard to judge exactly when is busy and not) NCL has LCD screens in certain areas of the ship showing how full all the dining rooms are and what the wait times are.

Another important thing I can recommend especially for a first cruiser goes for any cruise on any cruise line. On the first night, normally around 10pm the teen disco normally has a “meet and greet”. It may be awkward at first but in my opinion it is well worth going to because you will make friends and break the ice.

That’s about all I can think of… bottom line is enjoy all the Dawn has to offer and make sure he finds out about all the amenities offered. There is so much to do on the Dawn and the time will go very fast. Hope he enjoys his cruise!

Pete

^^^^^This Kid is Me 3 Years Ago...I'm not so worried about this place having access to an encyclopedia anymore.

I do the same thing whenever I hear someone is going on a cruise. In fact I have a tendency to violently freak out, and flood them with information before explaining how I know so much. It makes you look kinda like a dork, but lets face it, cruising is an addiction, but theres none better out there.

Thats me and im constantly talking about somethign cruies related. In my advance composition class we had to pick an abstract idea, I picked Beauty.. we're having to write 7 essays for the topic. One "essay" is a travel brochure, so I'm doing beauty. I'll be picking 3 ports and what to do there and also I'll write about the Beauty of Freedom on a cruise ship.
This boy in my class was like wow. You're obsessed and it didnt help that I randomly said "ah i love this weather it feels like, the top deck of a cruise ship at night" he was like.. there you go again.

Everyone thinks I'm a dork for loving cruises so much, and knowing so much about them. but oh well!

yeah as you all can probably guess by now I am obsessed, like really obsessed! In 8th grade I couldn't help but talk about cruises every other sentence. That went away eventually but my friends are still like HES OBSESSED and I just say yeah well you just don't understand lol. I want to work on cruises in the future, I'm seriously thinking about working as a photographer for a few years before I settle down. I researched it thoroughly and looks right for me. Is anyone else thinking of working on a cruise or am I like the only one?

Everythings been sent in, right now i'm wating to decide whether to take the ship contract or whether to take a contract at a resort I provide entertainment for in the summer. The resort would be more financially advantageous, but the ship is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I figure, however, that I can always do ships...

As cool as working on a ship would be, with the economy as bad as it is, wouldn't you be better off with the resort, since you say it's more financially advantageous?

Financially, the Resort is a better deal. But its also a lot more work and I'm working at home...no tropical islands.

On the other hand, unlike being on a ship, its ok to call the girls at the resort gig hot whereas on a ship thats a no no.

Well Ryan it looks like you have a veryyy tough decision to make. I'm not sure which one I would pick but I have to say going to all kinds of places several times on a ship is something that I want to do sometime in the future but its all up to you! So goodluck and I hope that you make the best decision for you

I just have a question about applying for a job on the cruise. How old do you have to be? How long is your time on the ship - its basically the summer right? And do you get paid a lot?

Hey,

I was and still am pretty interested in cruise line employment so I might me able to answer some of your questions.

17andacruiseaddict- It often can take months to get a response. What I have heard is you need to keep calling, sending letters, say you want to follow up on the resume you sent them. You can even send another so you are sure they get it. Keep contacting them and you should get their attention.

Now as far as the other questions: Depending on the job you wish to do, you can get a job at 18 on a cruise. That would normally be (for americans at least) a LOW paying job. If you want an easier, higher paying job, I suggest looking for a 'cruise staff' position. This can be a job as a photographer, gift shop employee, or maybe in the casino if you have the experience. For the last two, the pay is more reasonable and a good part about working in the gift shop or casino is when the ship is in port, you are closed so you can normally go off. For these positions the cruise line often contracts out to companies, so you will work for them instead of the cruise line directly. The minimum age for the gift shop companies, such as Dufree is 21 if I remember correctly. The accommodations are often better for cruise staff because you are often treated better.

Contracts on the other hand are normally longer for first time employees. They can be up to 8 months but if you really look around you may be able to find a quick summer one but these are hard to find. Once you get hired, when you go to apply for your second contract the cruise line will be more happy about hiring you when they see you already completed one contract. And as far as the pay goes, it varies by position. A staff position is probably your best bet, its much better that a crew position. You get more amenities and work less. For a photographer the average salary is 2,000 a month and for a gift shop employee, you can expect 1600-2000 + commission. May seem like not much pay, but on these types of jobs you can bank all your money because you have barely any expenses. You get health coverage, food, living, and so many amenities to use so its worth it if you are the right person for it.

Check out these postings to get an idea:

http://www.cruiseshipjob.net/joblistings/

Hope this helps,
Pete

I find it sooo funny that there is so many of us either applying or going to apply for different positions on a cruiseline. I printed out and filled out my application and mailed it off. But I havent heard anything back and my mom isnt too thrilled about my leaving the country for a long period of time... haha. but I think it would be a great opportunity if I could actually do it.

Right now Carnival is really backed up with their applications process. I sent my stuff in and have gotten some feedback but Its not looking like I'm going to take the contract because they're not willing to work on the scheduling with me and college is a priority for me.

Pete- Thanks for the info, that was a very well thought out and well put together post. Your really becoming a positive asset to this place. You should consider sending an email to Paul Motter and requesting an application for the position of "Teen Host". We had an application process 2 years ago and it came down to Kristina, Myself and CruiseGeekie (now a defunct member I believe) and you posess the writing ability and knowledge, much like myself, that would really make you a great host.

Hey,

Glad I could help everyone out. Last summer I really looked into cruise line employment and I thought I was like the only one around who would be interested in it. Now its nice to know that I'm not alone! I would love to help cruisemates by becoming a teen host as you said, DJ Carolina, but could you tell me exactly what I need to do?

-Pete
