Default First Cruise Question

I know I don't really fit into the teen category, but I feel that this is a better area to ask questions. What kind of fun is there for 18+ year olds? I'm going on my first cruise in December and I'm looking to have a good time, any tips?

See I'm in your boat. And the category in which we fit is not pretty. 18-21 is probably one of the oddest times to cruise in your life. I suggest trying out the nightclub, the casino (great place to meet women), try out the amenities and the day to day activities as well. Relax by the pool, play some basketball (most ships have this by now), try a hot tub too (another great place to meet people).

Thanks for the tips. Yeah I feel that I'm at a solid in between age and was just wondering what I could try to do to make this trip fun. I just want to have some fun, maybe meet some women, haha. Although, I'm sure I'm going to have a great time either way.

I agree with everything said before. I went on a cruise last spring break and had just turned 18. It definitely was a tough in between age--too old for the teen club, too young for any adult bars/activities--but I managed to make it fun. You should definitely check out the casino, night club, and pool area. There's usually older teens hanging out around these places so just put yourself out there and meet them! And I know this might sound random, but the elevators and stairwells are also good places to meet people. I actually met one of my best guy friends on that cruise in an elevator haha.

Good luck and I hope you have a great cruise!

Tried it, no luck, at least on Carnival the casino was always filled with old people. You may have better luck at the gym.

Ryan said he's had luck at the casino before. I haven't personally tried it, but from what I hear its possible. Gym works well too though. Forgot about that.

I also heard women tend to approach men more on cruises. Compared to like at a bar or club or something. Any truth to that?

Could be. Cruising is a lot more of a relaxed environment; its basically spring break regardless of when you go, so yes, people will be more outgoing than usual, I think, that regardless of that, however, you'll still have to approach the ladies.

I've approached guys when they are alone since it's less intimidating and I have also approached guys with another girl friend which works well. Oh btw, these occasions happend in the night club usually the first night, possibly the second.

Definitely, the environment is relaxed and besides, if the person turns out to be an idiot you can avoid them easily and you'll never see them again after the holiday. What cruise are you going on?

I'm on the same boat as the OP, I've been on previous cruises and I'm now worried that I won't have as much fun because I won't meet a lot of people. A part of me thinks there is a club for 18-21 year olds, is this true? I may be mistaken as this may have been on my last Princess cruise. I'll be gymming everyday, so perhaps I'll bump into people there..failing that, I'll sunbathe and spend the week with my parents HA....fun.

Hi Sarah,
Unfortunately, no 18-21 club. Just 18+. This is a major downfall on the part of the cruise lines, and many of the people who fit in that category, myself included, believe there should be such a club.

Meeting people is just relative to how friendly you are. Be outgoing and friendly, and you'll meet tons and tons of people.

Ok, allow me to throw out some thoughts here:

1. As Mike said, the Casino does work. I don't plan to turn this thread into "how to pick up chicks" but i'll give some insight into how things have worked for me since it may help people make some friends on vacation. It seems that the casino will attract the 18-20 crowd at some point. My experience is that on formal nights it seems to thrive with teens playing on the smaller denomination tables. My mom plays blackjack as a VIP with RCI, one of the reasons we get to travel so much, so I have a thorough knowledge of the game and once I turned 18, i was able to put that to the test. Playing well at a $10 table can keep you there for a long time, and rack up quite a chip stack. It would seem to me, girls respond well to friendly occasionally instructional conversation at a table, as long as your not acting like a cocky ass or trying to make them look stupid but rather engage in casual convo. After a while, it's easy to color up and leave the table with a new friend.

The thing to remember about cruises is that there ARE other teens in the 18-20 category out there and, without the interaction of fellow teens that age, their cruise will suck just as much as yours. Always remember that your on vacation with people that have no pre-determined assumptions about you, and if you screw something up...you never have to see them again at the end of the cruise. It's OK and ENCOURAGED to be outgoing on vacation. Not creepily outgoing, but perhaps more open and friendly than you would be to strangers at home.

Most larger ships have a ton of areas in which older teens congregate- but bars are not one of those places so you can strike that off your list. Hottubs always attract teens our age, as do the stairwells for some odd reason. I have yet to see a cruise where a solid 18-20 group begins in the nightclub, however it usually ends up there.

When it comes to making friends at 18-20 I had to learn the hard way with a SHI**Y cruise on the Grandeur opening up my 18+ cruise vacation. It took me a recovery cruise before I realized that it's a whole different ballgame after 18 and the way to meet people is really just to boost confidence another level and approach them in public areas. For me, I like to find two girls either travelling together or who met, and become friends with them. Then it makes it easy to add another guy, then balance the group from there on. The last night on my Oasis cruise was actually surprisingly fun after we built a solid group of teens our age.

Now as for those members who may not be as forward as others- Royal Caribbean does have a program for teens our age, but it depends on the ship as to whether it is pushed. Club 18-20 is a program RCI developed for teens in the in-between zone. I've seen it on Mariner, Enchantment, Monarch and Oasis so far and out of the 4 of them, Monarch somewhat did it, but Oasis and Mariner really did a good job of scheduling events. All the events were casual, no structure, just a meeting place and a time where people our age would congregate, meet, greet and form their friendships.

I think it's unfortunate that the cruise lines don't offer a better program for people our age. The only time we "really" enjoy the clubs on ships is during spring break when we dominate, and even then that is only relevant to the smaller or older ships which are less expensive and more likely to attract the broke college crowd (woot Carnival Fantasy).

With the "teen club generation" growing up, I think its safe to say that if we keep pressuring the cruise lines they'll be forced to create better cruise experiences for us just as they did 5 years ago when we pushed for better teen programs. I think a lot of people forget that only 5 years ago was Club O2 created as a "brand" and Fuel was only 6-7 years ago...back when most of us were just hitting the teen years. Most ships had a teen facility, but I can attest to the Fantasy's conversion of Spiral's Teen Club to Club O2 that it was after the revamp of the program fleetwide that all the ships began to really consider teens as "market" to which to cater.
