Oh that's cool. I'm not a huge fan of math. I like science. I really like pathology and anatomy but there aren't any classes like that at my school.

I'm a double Management/Advertising major... I formally apply to Advertising at the end of the current semester (it's a whole new applications process), and I get accepted into Management at the end of spring pending successful completion of coursework.

Advertising is a lot of design and creativity, with flares of leadership and management. Management is self-explanatory

That's awesome Michael/Mike! What do you prefer? Out of the few people that are on this board, obviously there would be two Michaels.

Good luck with the new application!

Honestly leaning towards Advertising at the moment even though I discovered my passion for business first. I like the creative aspects and the fact that I still get the business side of things as well.

Figured I'd chime in here (:

I'm applying to both the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College. They're so so so much more affordable than going out of state. My mom's more comfortable with me staying in state (from a financial & emotional aspect) for at least my first year to make sure I'll be able to handle everything after being home tutored for a year and a half due to my health. I'm super determined though & want to transfer out of state my sophomore year !

I was looking at majoring in communications but after researching some more the job outlook is pretty terrible and the salary isn't super high. I've decided to revert back to my lifelong dream of becoming a lawyer .. so i'll major in either some kind of business or political science in preparation for law school.

That's fun Rebecca! I tried to find some schools instate because my parents have money in college Illinois that I could use but I don't really like the schools in Illinois. And they didn't have super great business schools so I oxide schools in surrounding states that weren't too far. My parents are expecting me to get some money though if I go out of stare cause it's so expensive.

I'll cut in real quick.

I'm currently an out-of-state student (working on becoming a formal resident since Florida resident rates are ridiculously [70%] lower), but nonetheless, my out-of-state tuition rate is in the neighborhood (within $5,000 - 10,000) of the in-state back in Pennsylvania. So, in short, do your budgets and your research very carefully, because sometimes, in-state might not necessarily be the best option (academically, financially, socially, etc...). Also to remember is that the further you are from home, the higher your costs will tend to be (factor in a trip or two home, moving expenses), and the more difficult it will be emotionally if you aren't prepared to jump out into the world on your own. Other cost variables: housing, food, personal expenses, school expenses (books, supplies), travel.

As my sure you've been advised (and I'll just reiterate here anyways), your college list (the one's you are applying to) should be between 5 and 8 schools. 1 reach, 1 safety, 1 or 2 realistic choices, and 2 or 3 "padding" schools.

Also to remember, check the rankings of the individual colleges within the university that you plan on using (i.e. school of business, school of communications, etc...). There are ranking lists out there. Make sure you're getting a good bang for your buck.

On majors: you don't have to formally declare a major until the end of sophomore year in most cases. Unless you're carrying more than 30 credit hours with you, you have plenty of time to decide on what you want to do. Feel free to dabble here and there, and the "Liberal Arts" option is always a good way to get into a reach school you might not otherwise get into from an academic standpoint. Just make sure you have some sort of plan if you do use this option.

I think some states have reciprocity with one another for in-state tuition. I can't think of any specific states right now but I think there's some students at my SUNY (State Univ. of New York) school who are not from New York state but pay in-state tuition, and being from New York if I went to their state's school I'd pay in-state. I think they actually pay a little more than in-state but still less than out-of-state.

Just something else to think about.

I know that University of Wisconsin- Madison has residency rates for people living in Minnesota. Only public schools have in and out of state tuition too. Like if I were to go to Marquette in Wisconsin then I'd be paying the same as the people in Wisconsin. Otherwise I'd pretty much be paying out of state and I'd have to get a job, which I'm totally ok with.

Here in RI the two public schools, URI and RIC, are roughly $6,000 & $10,000 (residency rate, just tuition). I know that with room and board, meals, etc ... the prices are comparable to a lot of out of state schools. However, it takes 45 minutes to drive through the whole state so I could easily live at home and commute to school and pay just the tuition rate & my personal expenses.

Also, I think residency or reduced rates are offered here to most New England state residents based on a list of different majors. I'm not sure if that policy is in place at the private universities or not.

I wish I could apply to so many more schools than just the two in state. With my current health situation though that won't be possible. There are three private universities in Rhode Island, but they're ridiculously priced considering I have basically no interest in staying in the state very long. The two public universities are not much different in price than the community college here, so at least I can start off with the "real college" experience before transferring my sophomore year. They're also basically a no brainer to get accepted to. It looks like I'll be re-doing my major college search during my freshman year instead of now.

Rebecca, you'll have your shot to look out of state, for the time focus on the grades. Wherever you do your liberal studies doesn't really matter... unless you're ready to start on a major, the school can be a high school or community college. Once you start working on a major is when it makes a real difference. Socially, college is college. Sure there are small changes here and there, but in the end its all the same.
