Default Fire on Carnival Splendor

Here's one of the many articles :
Carnival Cruise fire: Carnival Cruise Ship Out of Long Beach Stranded at Sea After Fire Breaks Out - ktla.com

Thankfully no injuries have been reported. Everyone is still on the ship, however there's currently no power. It will be interesting to see if the ship is able to return under it's own power or if they'll have to use the tug boats. By checking the Carnival website you can see they canceled at least the next 2 sailings.

How would you feel if this happened while you were on a cruise ?

Should be a good story to follow ..

Update on Carnival Splendor
Posted on 08 November 2010

Miami, FL — November 8, 2010 (9 pm EST) — At approximately 6 am this morning (U.S. Pacific Standard Time), a fire was detected in the aft engine room aboard the cruise ship Carnival Splendor. The fire has been extinguished. There were no injuries to guests or crew.

The ship has been operating on auxiliary generators throughout the day and engineers have been unable to restore additional power to the vessel. As a result, the current voyage is being terminated. Tugboats are currently en route to the ship which is located off the coast of Mexico, approximately 150 miles south of San Diego. The tugs will tow the vessel to Ensenada, Mexico in an effort to get the guests home as quickly as possible.

Currently several key hotel systems, including air conditioning, hot food service, flushing toilets and telephones are not available. The ship’s crew is actively working to restore partial services.

Regular announcements apprising guests of the situation began at approximately 6.30 am. Guests were initially asked to move from their cabins to the ship’s upper open deck areas. At this time, guests have access to their cabins and are able to move about the ship. Bottled water and cold food items are being provided.

The vessel’s command is in contact with the U.S. Coast Guard which has deployed aircraft and cutters to the cruise ship’s location.

Guests on the current voyage will be receiving a full refund along with reimbursement for transportation costs. Additionally, they will receive a complimentary future cruise equal to the amount paid for this voyage.

“We know this has been an extremely trying situation for our guests and we sincerely thank them for their patience. Conditions on board the ship are very challenging and we sincerely apologize for the discomfort and inconvenience our guests are currently enduring. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority and we are working to get our guests home as quickly as possible,” said Gerry Cahill, president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines.

Carnival Splendor was on the first leg of a seven-day Mexican Riviera cruise that departed yesterday, Nov. 7, from Long Beach, Calif. Today was a scheduled day at sea. The ship’s normal itinerary includes stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The ship, which measures 113,000 gross registered tons and first entered service in July 2008, is carrying 3,299 guests and 1167 crew.

That's got to be highly annoying.. not to mention unsanitary. And cold food only does not seem enticing. At all.

I know if I was on that ship I could deal with cold food and this time of year lack of air conditioning, but no flush toilets? I thought part of the Coast Guard and SOLAS requirements were that after a fire incident all necessary systems for safety, comfort, and sanitation remained working, even if there's no propulsion.

UPDATE, 8:01 AM ET: A Carnival spokesman tells USA TODAY engineers on the Splendor have restored power to the ship's cabin toilet system, and running cold water also has been restored to cabin bathrooms. Other systems remain down.

That's good that the toilets are functioning again. Still, that ship must not smell too pleasant with toilets not working for a day & food spoiling if refrigeration isn't working. I'm not sure where my mom read it, but she mentioned she saw that it was still going to take 12 hours or so for the tug to reach the ship, then another 24-36 to get it back to Ensenada.

"The 952-foot ship is about 55 miles off the northern Baja coast and tugboats, expected to arrive midday Tuesday, will take it to the Mexican port of Ensenada.

Coast Guard Lt. Khris Johns, who was on a cutter at the scene, told NBC's TODAY show that it will take two tugs about 24 hours to bring the ship to port."

So it looks like tugboats won't get to the ship until midday today and will take 24 hours to tow it to port.

Tug boats, USS Reagan en route to disabled cruise liner - Travel - News - msnbc.com

What I don't get is, it took them 3 hours to put the fire put? I thought engine rooms are supposed to have CO2 systems to release and smother any fires. They taught us at school that engine rooms have Carbon Dioxide systems, and if there's a fire an alarm from the bridge sounds so people in the engine room know to get the hell out, and then once they're all out CO2 is supposed to be released. If it took them 3 hours to get the fire out that was either one helluva big fire or the CO2 system wasn't working right.

I didn't understand that either. I have no clue how an engine room operates, but that did seem like a long time for a fire to be burning. I read that the fire flared up again some time after it was put out ..

I also don't understand why it took 12 hours or so for them to start sending tug boats, choppers, and cutters ? That seems like a crazy long before sending help.

I asked a friend of mine who's going for his US Coast Guard Engine License. He says it should have taken "minutes to an hour" to put out even a really big fire, "not more than an hour".

Halon and CO2 systems are released in seconds and should have smothered the fires. Means something went wrong with fire extinguishing systems.

Here's something someone posted on a CC thread. I never considered this ..

"BUT, more importantly, as the Coast Guard has said tonight, they will not give the exact location of the Splendor, because of the security risk (disabled and vulnerable ship with thousands of Americans onboard). Thankfully the Reagan is nearby, so that should be a deterrent"

Thoughts ?

Hadn't thought about the security issue but that makes sense.

The latest thing I heard was one of the tugs got to it. They're going to see how fast they can actually tow the ship and even thought it might take a little longer, see if they can tow the ship to San Diego, CA instead of Ensanada, Mexico. They said that depends on how fast they can actually tow the ship. If they can't tow the ship fast enough they will go to Mexico and bus everyone to California.

And I heard they expect to get the ship to San Diego "Midday Thursday".

Default Why the fire started ..

This is from a news conference held at 3PM PST. Somebody from the area summarized it as it aired for those that do not have access to San Diego news.

Cause of fire? Aft generator room, 6 diesel generators. Gen #5 had an internal malfunction, which caused fire. Surprising that it woud happen, never has before, only 2 years old. crankcase split, causing fire. Isolated to aft generator room.

Generator 5 crank case spilt and created the fire which might explain the refire

It's on TV now - the ship is just miles from docking in San Diego ! You can watch live on CNN, and I'm sure other national news stations. Should be really interesting when reporters get a hold of passengers as they disembark.

I just saw a live webcam of the port of San Diego and saw it just about alongside the dock with the tugs.

Looks like people are starting to disembark the ship in San Diego.
Stricken Splendor Passengers Start to Disembark - CBS News

From the point of view of a naval architecture student, and talking to friends of mine who are studying for their US Coast Guard Engine License, something doesn't seem quite right with the official story of what caused the fire in the first place, they should have been able to run the ship on backup generators.

I saw on the news that they had some food dropped off by helicopter and some of that food was some spam. Talk about a food downgrade?

There were venders at the pier selling "Spamcation" shirts to the passengers as they debarked. Talk about a quick way to make money !

The news said that even though the Spam was dropped off, they never actually served it to the passengers.

Cruise Director John Heald posted on his facebook a little while ago that Splendor will be out of service until January.

I've been reading the cruise director John Heald's blog the past few days, here's the link: John Heald's Blog

One thing that I really do not understand, here's where John Heald quoted the Chief Engineer:

Quote:
“Captain, the main switchboard is finished………………. he paused…………… and then his voice cracking with emotion he said words I will never forget. I cannot give you anything………. nothing…………. no engines, no power…………… everything is finished………… finished…………. finished.”
Ships are supposed to be designed that a fire in one generator will not do that. That's bad design if a fire, the way it has been described, will do that to the switchboards (I think there were two switchboards), and a fire like that should not have completely disabled the ship.

Fire was actually not on a generator but in the main electrical system. From what I gather, the fire managed to kill the main system board. John Heald has a much more detailed look at the engineering of the issue than CCL has been disclosing in their releases...

I've been reading it as soon as he's been updating - it's so addicting ! He seems like a fantastic cruise director, I'd love the chance to sail with him some day. I think it's great he maintained his sense of humor through the whole ordeal.

My mom just told me he was the cruise director on my first ever cruise, 1999 inaugural season on Carnival Triumph, short 4 night trip from NYC to Halifax.

And the engineering of the issue is what interests me, and might help me get a good grade in class

I just noticed something. Check out the last question that was asked in the "Question Game". Here's a hint, I asked it a few days before the fire on the Splendor, and it's just weird timing with what I asked there that Splendor had that fire.

I just thought it was weird timing that I asked about cruise ship safety in the Question Game on this forum, and then a few days later the Splendor had its problems and got stuck out at sea.

Oh, now I get what you're saying ! I remember thinking that when it happened because I had answered the question.

Infamously futile cruise ship coming to port | San Francisco Examiner

Looks like they're now bringing it to San Francisco. The article is dated as of yesterday (Jan 12, 2011).
