Default Luggage

How much luggage do you bring when you go on a cruise or any vacation?

I usually bring a pretty big suitcase for 5 and 7 day vacations, and like at least one pair of shoes for each day... haha

I bring the biggest suitcase I have & a sometimes a small carry on. My mom & I also share a medium sized suitcase that we put all the toiletries and other odd items in. I fill the whole big suitcase with clothes and shoes. Everyone's told me I overpack, but I refuse to believe it since I manage to use/wear everything I bring lol

Haha. My mom always asks me if I really need 4 pairs of flip flops (black, white, brown, grey), a pair of heels, regular sandals, and sneakers. Then she tells me there's laundry on board, I don't need to bring my whole closet. I've always managed to keep my suitcase under 50lbs for the flights though, barely ..

I'd rather have too much & not use it than not have enough.

Unless you plan to pay 2nd bag, or overweight fees, or perhaps fly Southwest forever, you may want to reconsider your packing....and this comes from someone, who was the queen of overpackers!

Yeah, I usually travel ultra light. I was in New York for half of last week, and I managed with a duffle and backpack. Considering I had to look professional during the day and still hit the bars/clubs at night, it was quite an accomplishment. As for cruises, it's easier for me now that most of my stuff is in Florida. Saves me the whole luggage thing. I still only take a single suitcase on cruises and maybe carry my suit on hands for a week cruise (and that's heavy for me)

I just bring one suitcase with enough t-shirts, pairs of socks, and pairs of boxers for however many days the cruise is, plus 1 or 2 spare in case a shirt or something rips. I'll throw in 1 pair of sneakers too, so I'll have that plus what I wear onto the ship. I'll also bring a backpack, usually fairly empty at the start of the cruise but with souvenirs in it by the end of the trip.

Our last 3 cruises, both on Carnival out of NYC (1 on Victory, 2 on Miracle) we all had to pack light, because we took the commuter railroad into Grand Central and then took the subway from there to the ship, so we had to make sure we could haul our luggage around the subway stations. It was worth it, instead of spending $100 on a car service each way, or $30 per day to park, we spend roughly $24 for the three of us to get to the ship, and another $24 to get home from the ship, and that's for me, my mom, and my dad.

Not too bad. I mean a large suitcase is expected... keep in mind what you take on you have to take off.

I tend to use mine more than once before considering it "worn".. so as a guy I take max 2 per 5 days. However, women tend to care more about style so likely gonna be more than 2.

Cruises rarely will take on hurricanes. That's what diverted ports are for
Hurricanes really work either way, either you get your itinerary altered for better or for worse. I've had two extra days tacked on to the end of a cruise before because of a hurricane, and I've had several modified itineraries that weren't so great (Freeport and Nassau can only be interesting so many times...)

As for February weather in Mexico, its usually relatively warm. I'd take a sweater just in case though... I always carry a hoodie onboard even if I know it's going to be "hot".

Remember, that your big piece of luggage could be hit with an overweight charge.....check with your carrier...

Trip is right... Unless you're driving, make sure to check the weight on your luggage before you leave home. Don't load more than 50 pounds or you risk the overweight charge.

If you're driving though (or taking a train), then you don't really need to worry about that. But even so don't pack it so heavy that you're not strong enough to lift it, like my mom likes to do and then makes me lift it up the stairs at the subway station.

We have just done a month long fly cruise with P&O, we were allowed 1 case each to check in at no more than 23kg's (50 pounds), we were not allowed any excess baggage & were told most definitely NO EXTRA & if it is over you have to leave it behind... you CANNOT pay extra. We were allowed one piece of carry on each, but this was very small & limited to 5KG's (about 10 pounds). Bearing in mind P&O have a dress code that included 8 formal & 4 semi-formal (Jacket for men) this isn't a lot. Trouble is that whilst some people obeyed the instructions an awful lot didn't & of course nothing was said, a lady on our table paid 210 in excess baggage! I wish cruise company's would apply their rules across the board.

See that is extremely odd considering the added weight doesn't really affect the ship in any way, unlike an aircraft that does need to be properly balanced and has a max weight capacity.

That is weird, the weight restrictions on luggage on a cruise. Even the smaller cruise ships need added weight in the range of hundreds to thousands of tons to have any significant affect on balance and trim. I'll stop here before I bore anyone with technical mumbo-jumbo.

I just reread that post. It's a fly cruise. As in fly to the cruise then board. Makes more sense now. Most European airlines are more strict than US based with luggage, so if the luggage restriction is for the aircraft, then yes, it's likely 23 kg/50 lbs unless you're flying budget.
