I don't have a problem with automatic tipping. We were on NCL recently and this was done. The only problem I have is if someone doesn't want to have that much taken out, they should be able to change it without problems. I saw one man trying to decrease his tip and he was given a very bad time by the purser's office.
I think it is interesting that we are hearing about people having problems changing tip amounts more than once, and not just from one cruise line. Those sidelong glances when people try to change the tip amounts are certainly not welcome by passengers. Tipping is supposed to be discretionary, not mandatory.

I agree completely. While I would always tip the waiter and busboy according to the recommended amount (we tip for the four people in our party - 2 adults/2 children) I don't give them alot extra as the kids don't eat in the dining room. I would give extra to the Lido Deck Staff as I'm sure the kids keep them busy. Same goes for the Cabin Stewart..he gets extra as he has to keep coming back to clean the cabin in the morning as the kids don't get up until later in the morning. We're sailing in July on the Triumph, and I think I'm going to reverse the prepaid tipping (regardless of the looks) and hand them cash with a big 'thank you'. I know why the cruise lines are doing this. On the Sensation two years ago I was disgusted how many people did not show up for the last dinner.
