April 3 Frommer's Newsletter has long article on dining and tipping. Has a couple very interesting letters re "Ren" tipping. On our Princess and Ren cruises we plan to go immediately to the office and change the dining room tip to what we usually give. Will tip cabin steward separate.
We always tip extra if the dining room staff and cabin steward have been attentive and gave better than average service.
Is there a location on the Internet with that Frommer's Newsletter? I would certainly like to read that article. I have been in some discussions on these boards and others as well as directly with Princess concerning their change in policy to automatic tipping. I will stop directly at the Purser's Desk upon boarding the Grand Princess to cancel my auto-tipping. My wife and I have elected traditional dining and prefer to tip directly to our servers rather than pooling our funds. To me, Princess is making something impersonal out of an action that should be very personal.
I understand WHY Princess is doing this... I just disagree with their methodology.

PS I think this stuff is all public domain, but if I'm doing something wrong, please advise and I will cease and desist. I don't like hand cuffs... okay, okay, maybe on special occasions. <I'm kidding... I'm kidding>
