Default Tipping on tax

Does everyone tip on the whole amount of their bill with the tax included, when you eat out? I refuse to.

I usually just double the tax and that is what I tip, I think it usually comes out to more that what is required but its easier to figure that way. Have I been doing it wrong.

On a cruise we tip the mandatory amount. I think the cruise lines do it that way so it will be easier for us and we do like it that way. Then the last night I give extra to the room steward and the waiter and assistant. Always, they do a good job and we do keep them busy. I have never had anything to complain about. They never ask me to do the dishes or cook, its worth an extra $50 or so.

Anita,

I am just talking about tipping when eating out. On cruises, we tip like you do.

Yes I am a server!! Take the tax and double ( in B.C. cdn. 14% tax),
I do agree thou if you have bad service don't tip!! I just think that if you can afford to go out you can afford to tiP!
Cheers,
captangel

Double the tax, so do you mean tip 28 % . Dream on, not unless the server did something incredible.

no double would be 14%! an average tip for good service is 10 to 15 % on the whole bill!! with the tax, if you choose not to, well thats your choice! Why don't you try doing it for a week!
cheers,
captangel

Just to put this issue in perspective:

If the sales tax rate is 7%, and you normally tip 18%, then by tipping on the amount including tax, for every $1 you spend you will pay an extra $.0126 (one and one-quarter cents).

If the bill is $50, you'll pay an extra 63 cents
If the bill is $100, it will cost you an extra $1.26

Another option is to eat out in Delaware (or another state with 0% sales tax) and avoid the issue altogether!!!
