My husband and I are sailing the Zuiderdam with HAL next month and would like to try the alternative dining (Pinnacle Grill). We are paying a nominal fee to dine there (tip not included), so I am confused as to how to tip. Of course part of the tip will be based on the experience, but I want to have a guidline before I dine. Any suggestions? Thanks!
We were on the Zaandam a couple of years ago. The alternative restaurant(s) were no additional charge at that time. We too were a bit stymied about tipping. I finally decided to tip based upon what an equivalent dinner would have cost on shore. I figured it was easily a $100 meal (excluding wine even) - it was great. So we left 15% or $15. We felt very comfortable with that and we're not huge overtippers. Evidently that was WAY more than others gave - and I have no judgment/opinion about that. Even though the restaurant was booked solid for the remainder of the trip (almost 3 weeks), our server would seek us out regularly and offer us reservations I did find out from him that the servers in the alternative restaurant make quite a bit more than the "regular" dining stewards. I still felt comfortable with that %. I'd be interested, however, in others opinions and experiences.
