I like to just use the autotip with extra added into the account instead of the envelope method - but is it considered rude not to present someone with an envelope? What do most people do or prefer to do?
I say do what feels right for you. The staff is used to the majority of people using the auto-tip feature so don't worry about what they might think if you don't present an envelope and others do. If it still concerns you once onboard, just make a quick mention of it when you thank them on the final night of your cruise.

I prefer the auto tip method since we usually sail on ships with open dining.
We also will give extra to wait staff that made our cruise more enjoyable as well as the cabin steward if they went above & beyond.
I used the auto-tip for the first time on our last cruise on the Majesty. They still had envelopes for us and we just put the voucher in them and handed the envelope with the voucher to the proper individual. We didn't tip extra because honestly, no one really did anything exceptional that merited any extra tip.
The auto tip was great though because I didn't have to worry about hanging onto the extra cash to put in the envelope!
