The latest scuttlebutt on the status of the two American flagged cruise ships under construction is that Congress is trying to get rid of the "egg on their face" for the failure of the "pork barrel. Congress is trying to get the U.S. Navy to take over the two ships, when and if completed to be uses as hospital ships and/or"floating command centers". At this time construction has been discontinued by Northrop , the contractor which is looking for about $60 million due for work performed. These vessels were being built for American Classic Voyages which has declared bankruptcy. The cost of these 1,900 passenger ships was estimated at $440 million each but subsequent news indicated the cost could run over $500 ,million. Cruise ships with similar passenger capacity are being built in European shipyards for $350million to $400 million..
