Pretty sure someone could remove the duct tape!

I haven't seen a room number on a S/S card on any cruise. If you lose your card, go quickly to the GR desk. They swipe you a new one and the old one is invalid so no one else can use it . Seems a no-brainer to me---the S/S cards are here to stay, thank goodness.
The older crusies did have room numbers on the cards and this is an old thread. I pulled this thread up the other night-just bored-I am sorry if I confused you.

! I still have my old cards and yes the older crusies had the room number. I think the first cruise that did not was in 2003.

In this post 911 world we live in virtually every square inch of that ship is under surveillance. Even is someone got your S&S card, went into your room and looted it, all security has to do is run the tape of your hallway to see who was recorded going in and coming out of your room during the time that your cabin was robbed. I may be stretching here but I would not be surprised if the ships are not equipped with face recognition software. In fact, I would bet on it.

I am soooo very thankful for the Sail & Sign. No need to carry cash. Nowadays even the slot machines take your sail & sign. It works for me. I am well aware of how much money I am spending. However, I also attach my Sail and Sign to my credit card with a nice high credit line. I don't want anything to interfer with me having the time of my life -- AGAIN

Just to spin a new angle.
The cards (which I like) are like casino chips...you don't really feel like you are spending money. Just signing away instead of watching money leave your hands.

I can think of no other negatives when it comes to the S/S cards in use today.

If what kooky says is true, that is enough to turn me away from Carnival to Celebritry.

That is an interesting point you made. Since our photo comes up on the screen when we disembark, maybe they could set the S&S POS registers to do the same. The waiter could tell right away if the pic on the screen belongs to the person who gave him his S&S card.

I like the S&S cards, and feel that making change and pilferage would be a nightmare and take a lot of time. I do believe though, that the cruise companies have an ulterior motive in using them. Most of us tend to spend more on plastic than when we use "real" money and the cruise people count on this concept. I keep all receipts in an envelope set aside for this purpose and check my bill periodically for accuracy.

As far as using the card for my safe, I use an expired credit card, or library card that we keep with our cruise docs for this purpose. Too many folks have said the safe desensitizes their credit cards and S&S cards magnetic strips.

The simplest way to deal with this is to go to the purser's desk at your first opportunity after boarding and put a cash deposit on your account. Check periodically and add more to it if you wish. If you put enough, nothing will go on your credit card. Anytime we have cash leftover from the ports, we put it on our account.

I think if they had to deal with cash it would affect the quality of service...everything would be so slow!

Default wHY THE SIGN AND SAIL?

#1 No line at the purser's desk denying a charge, a signature is proof.
#2 No stiffing the staff
#3 No soaked currency in the till
#4 speed and efficiency at the bar
#5 No need for waiters to "balance"

Default My wife

considers the Sign and Sail card to be just like our checkbook!

She does not worry about the onboard balance just like she does not worry about the checkbook, her philosophy is:

"I can't be overdrawn, I still have checks left"

There are quite a few charges that do not require a signature...
Dry cleaning, mini bar use, bar tabs (when you get to know your server), etc.

Carnival no longer puts any personal info on the sail and sign cards. My hubby tends to forget his cabin number (no comment) and he was very embarrassed when that wasn't even on the card and he had to go to the purser's desk to ask where he "lived".

My last two Carnival cruises didn't have the room number on the card, just the folio and dining room table numbers.

I just discovered that my sail and sign card is still in my wallet!

How sad is that?

I have kept all of our S&S cards as souvenirs and even have a few cabin keys laying around the house. Maybe I can sneak on a ship one day and let myself into an empty cabin

I haven't seen a room number on a S/S card yet in the years we have been sailing. Your folio ( which is your account #) and your table# are on the card. Whenever I purchase anything I must provide my room number at the time of the charge before I sign. If it does not match their records I believe they put out an alert regarding that card - or call the actual card holder to see if he/she lost their card.

Only thing on my card is the dining time, life boat number, sail dates and my name.
Nothing else.

In the future you just sign for everything (I guess no one remembers that Flintstones episode where the Great Gazoo sends Fred & Barney to the future). Seems like its here on the ships.
