Well, join the rest of America. According to the latest poll by the Rand Corp., a nonprofit research group, approximately 64% of Americans are overweight, 21% of them obese. The number of extremely obese, 100 lbs or more overweight, has quadrupled since the 1980's to 4 million Americans. The bottom line is that you will have lots of company on the cruise, so enjoy yourself and don't worry about it. I happen to be one of those few who isn't overweight, but it takes many hours of exercising and jazzercizing each week, not to mention the low carb/calorie dieting. Good luck.

I am thin. I don't work at it--- I just am.

I think on every cruise there should be a vote to select the passenger who deserves the award of "Official Cruise Busy Body". You know the type. The one that stares at fat people, smokers, children, chair savers, and mumbles rude comments under their breath. The one that complains to the staff about every little thing from no towels to emptying ashtrays. The dinner mate who spends the whole meal time talking about those awful children in the pool, and how "this cruise line really needs to do something about embarkation procedures".

Perhaps if they had the "Official Cruise Busy Body" badge on, they would receive a few stares and comments too!

We all go on cruises to get away from our normal everyday lives. We go to have fun, to meet new people, to talk about the sights we see, and enjoy the sea. We meet people from other countries and other walks of life, and for a few days we are "all in the same boat together".

To all of you cruise busy bodies. Just enjoy your trip and let others enjoy theirs. Nobody appreciates your stares, comments, fanning, mumbling etc. If you have to control something, then control yourself or stay at home.

There is this very heavy couple we met on 2 cruises. They were our table mates on first cruise. Not complaining about their size. But, they were slobs, wore short shorts and dirty tee shirts. Never dressed for formal nights. Blew their nose in their napkins. Ordered 2 or 3 dinners and desserts. Talked with food in their mouth. AND passed gas all the time! Of course skinny people can be like this. Also dont think they used their cabin shower.

They didn't shower because they couldn't fit inside.

Amen! FL98LADY!!

Though I do understand. I am not a small person myself and it pains me to see extremly heavy people wearing string bikinis (seeing I don't like to see itsy bitsy people in them either) I would never wear a bikini...I would not wish that upon any one ! ! but some of these women and men just have no sense! On my last cruise I saw a 300lb+ 60 year old woman in a thong bikini....I had nightmares!!!!!!! Like I said Im not tiny either so Im not rippin on her size......it was just bad.

I guess I'll weigh in on this topic, haha.

I'm severely obese (more than 100 pounds overweight)...and yes, it's my own damn fault. My mom was overweight and I learned bad eating habits at a very early age. I've been on the diet roller coaster most of my life. At one point, I lost 80 pounds and was within 10 pounds of my goal. Then I got married... And it's been a slow inflation ever since. I stress eat and life has been stressful... I'm trying to develop alternative coping mechanisms - but I don't think I deserve criticism anymore than people who smoke when they're stressed, rant & rave, drink, etc.

All that being said, I don't like how I look - and I WON'T be wearing a bikini. I'm not sure whether I'll even be wearing a swim suit at all - but it hurts when people are critical. On one of my cruises, when I got on or off an elevator, someone said "Boy, that is one big woman". When I see an "ugly" person, I don't comment. When I talk to a "stupid" person, I don't comment. But then, I guess the person who made that comment about me would probably be one who would comment rudely about any number of things.

I got a room with a private balcony so I can sun in private if I choose. I'll probably be wearing a casual dress with sandals on lido and just get sun on my legs - but I sure think I have a right to wear whatever I choose.

AND - I resent the people on this thread who have posted about slobby obese people as if they are slobs BECAUSE they are obese. There are no more slobby obese people than slobby thin people. Some people are just slobs. Period. Some of them happen also to be obese. Some of them are thin. Go figure.

Janet,

I hope you have not taken my coment to heart. Im a big girl too. But I like you know better than to wear a bikini. Theres just some people (a majority of society) that cannot pull off a string bikini! I am one of them lol! Please don't take a rude comment to heart! Just because 1 ******* makes a rude comment it doesn't mean you shouldn't feel free to enjoy yourself.

I also agree though that everyone has a right to wear what feels comfortable (as long as no "speacial" areas are showing). I may not have agreed with what the woman on the cruise I went on wore but I kept my mouth shut.....to tell you the truth I was jealous...I wish I was that comfortable with my body!

No Cassie, I didn't have any problem with anything you said. I guess I can't even really blame the person on my cruise who commented on my size - I just wish they had kept their mouth shut within my hearing!

no, there was no need for that comment! There is never a need for a comment like that. When i was on the cruiz, the elevator got really overloaded....it actually said OVERLOAD I was petrified that I was going to get looks (im a size18) luckily two girls Id say weighing a 100lbs together were the ones that tiped the scale! lol I was so releived.

Janet I hope I didn't hurt your feelings if I did I'm sorry,I do apprieciate that most people who have weight issues aren't happy about it, I was so thin as a youngster my mom took me to a doctor! I was ALWAYS called skinny, flatsy, bone rack, stick, you name it , and the thing is, because I was thin people seemed to think it was o.k. to say it TO MY FACE! It is very painful for a 16 yr old girl to have everyone laugh at her and comment on the fact that" you don't even have a bum, you've got a back with a crack" ha ha ha , just hilarious.
The person who made the comment on the elevator was just an idiot. Period. No manners no class.
As to people with other issues(smoking, drinking) trust me on these boards they get commented on!!
The perfect cruiser: Wears a tux to formal night, or long beaded gown!
Tips over and beyond recommended amounts
Is thin and trim
Doesn't ever sneak booze on board
Tips Maitre"d just for saying hello to him
Does not smoke ( cigars or cigarettes)
Ideally does not bring children ( unless perfectly behaved)
Never saves a deck chair( even if wife just went to washroom)

The perfect cruiser: DOES NOT EXIST ( except in his/her own mind)

It's that easy? Wow I wonder why I have been over weight for the past 12 years. Listen I ahve been on both sides, Way too skinny as a child (belimic Sp?) and now overweight. It's not just what you eat..there can be alot of other problems as well. If eating healthy or lack of is the only reason some people are large and others small, my brother in law would be 5'9" 400lbs instead of 165. We are all diffrent, no matter what some of us try we will never be a size 6 So live with it or walk around with your eyes closed!

Cause baby there is alot more heavy people than thin.

The laws of physics apply here too. What you take in must equal what is burrned off plus what is stored.

If you take in 2000 calories you must burn 2000 calories or the rest gets stored as fat. Now, each individual's metabolism burns at a different rate. It may be because of a malfunctioning thyroid or something other medical condition that some people just don't have an efficient metabolic system. And as you age your rate changes too. I cannot possibly burn calories at the same rate I did when I was 15 years old.

Quitting smoking was not nearly as difficult for me as losing the 25 lbs. I gained afterwards. But I did lose them. But I think I found them in my butt.

Regards,
Thomas

you know its a sad, sad world when people become so concerned about what others look like. I thought the whole idea of a cruise was to get away, have fun and relax. How much a person weighs does not change this and if people are so concerned about the way the " fat" people on the cruise behave, then they have wayyyyy too much time on their hands and need to get a life........... besides there are alot of "heavier" people around who are much healthier and happier than the "thinner" people who spend their time making comments about them....

You know what I find interesting? It's that not one of the 75 replies in this discussion agrees with the alleged crack made in the original posting about "fat touristy women". Everyone else either disagreed or griped about similar cases of discrimination. Yet the discussion goes on and on with fresh indignation from those who find offense. I'm beginning to think the real problem is not being insulted about your appearance by others. It's thinking that others may notice your appearance and disapprove. Hey, maybe that's the motivation behind the I-hate-to-dress-up postings, too.

We should all relax and realize that nobody's worried about the way we look. And even if they were, why does it matter to us what they think?

If all the overweight people stayed home, there would be no cruise ships. If you are fat, please cruise.

True, but gluttony is another thing. If you are trying to get your moneys worth by eating as much as you can. I remember watching on my last cruise, Sovereign of the Seas in July, two overweight young women (20's) with plates piled high with fried chicken from the Windjammer standing in line for pizza to eat with it. Yes, there are medical conditions but overeating and inactivity are the primary reasons for being fat and suffering medical problems. It is NOT normal to be overweight just because everyone else is. I am still the same size I was in college 20 years ago (never been out of the 180's at 5'8" lean and muscular ) because I exercise and eat well but not to excess. I will always remember my 7th grade science teacher who said, "I eat to live not live to eat" So if you just had a full course meal there is no need to rush to the midnight buffet like you are going to miss something. Besides, if you don't eat so much, there is more room for beer!

When on a cruise, or any other vacation, you are escaping from everyday stress and strain to rejuvenate yourself. It is a way to re-energize. I believe people should eat what they want, spend what they want, drink what they want, wear what they want, sleep when they want, etc. within the boundaries of common decency amongst a group of 2000 others when on vacation and remove the constraints associated with everyday life.

There are many factors which figure into my selection of cruising as my vacation choice. One of them is being able to drink the extra beers in the casino or disco and not have to drive anywhere. Heavy people may find eating a variety of foods in bountiful quantities without other people commenting on it as one of their top factors.

Thomas

Thomas,

I think you may be right. I often over indulge in alcohol and it is great to be able to without having to drive anywhere. In fact sometimes I have drank so much, that some of the chubby girls looked thin. However, one time I drank 12 beers and still didn't get laid.

It's really all in fun. I have a great time every time. Only 201 days to go unless I can get away for a 3-4 day in the meanwhile.

I agree, I love cruising. Just wish some people ( no one in particular) would concentrate more on themselves then other people.
I agree drinking does seem to make things and people look better. Im reminded of that everytime I look at my ex! lol

Chubby girls aren't always "desperate" and willing to take just anything.... sometimes there is not enough drinks in the world to make arrogance go away regardless of how good lookin the guy is.
