Default People Who Are Always Right

Or perhaps, people who are perfect!. All of us have opinions based on our upbringing, religion, education, country of residence etc. These appear in our comments on children, smoking, fat people, wheelchairs, breastfeeding, smuggling alcohol, dining room attire etc.

Some of us try to be humourous in expressing our opinions, while others appear deadly serious. While all us have a right to express ourselves, I am bothered by those who are convinced that they are right and most everyone else is wrong. there is no such thing in reasonable debate as black and white. There are only various shades of grey.

If someone tells you to " get a life," I think it would be much bettter to "get a cruise!" Now, what have I gone and done?

I think you're right. No wait, I think you're wrong. No, that's not it either. I think you might be right, but then you might be wrong. But if you are wrong then I might be right, but if you're right then I might be wrong. Then maybe we are both right and wrong.

Nice to meet you, Mr. Right!

Regards,
Thomas

Thomas is the only person we know of here who is always right, maybe, I'm not sure. Maybe he is never right, or, perhaps, sometimes.
Seriously I am always right, but then , I am ME after all.
In friendly conversation, such as what you get involved in at dinner or poolside on a ship, it is probably best to leave some things out of conversation such as religion and politics and probably better to keep opinions and statements a little more on the diplomatic style than the firm opinions , statatements and stances one might take amoung long standing friends. Just my opinion, but remeber, I am always right.

I'd think on most of these subjects there is rarely a definitive right or a definitive wrong...only an opinion. But then, maybe I'm wrong about that

If you can't stand people who are always right, don't get married! As a man, I know half the time my wife is right. The other half of the time I'm wrong. I accept it and I live with it.

Glad you understand how it works, Steve.......Your wife is lucky!

Have you noticed there are folks that not only have to be right, but have to make YOU wrong? I think that's what Mike is talking about. We all think we're right...right for us, or right for our family, or whatever. But there are those that think in order to be FULLY right, they must make someone with a differing opinion wrong.

This subject comes up twice a week for me in the 2 debate classes I teach. One of the first hurdles you teach students to overcome is that your argument CAN'T always prove the other person wrong. Sometimes the evidence just isn't there. I also teach them there is a way to win and a way to win graciously. The kids that are the best debaters learn to win graciously and without that "I told you so" attitude.

Lately there have been some posters that made me think "Gee, they must be awfully insecure to need EVERYONE to think they're right." Sometimes I really don't care whether someone thinks I'm right or not. I can respect a differing opinion, even if I can't agree with it.

And, of course, Thomas is always right. When he's sober that is......

Everyone who has posted so far on this thread has been right, or maybe I am wrong.
I would dine with any of you on my next cruise if only I had a cruise.

I was thrilled when I met my "Mr. Right." It was only after we were married that I found out his first name is "Always."

Along those lines, an old quote from a friend of mine who has bad luck in the romance department once said:

"If a man talks in the forest and no one hears him, is he still wrong?"

Mrs. Thomas says I'm right all the time. She says, "clean out the garage, right now," and "mow the lawn, right now". But then I get even with her and hide the drain plug for the tub.

Regards,
Thomas

Just a favorite quote, from that source of many a good quote, Frank Lloyd Wright, who, God love him, had an ego as big as all outdoors:

"Very early in life, I realized that I would have to choose between honest arrogance or a hypocritical humility. I chose arrogance."

Hey, it ain't braggin' if you can do it. Arrogant competent people don't bother me; neither do polite incompetent people. Look out for the ones who are rude AND incompetent.

Turning back to the topic for a moment...

Some of us try to be humourous in expressing our opinions, while others appear deadly serious. While all us have a right to express ourselves, I am bothered by those who are convinced that they are right and most everyone else is wrong. there is no such thing in reasonable debate as black and white. There are only various shades of grey.

I confess to being one of those who appear deadly serious when airing my opinions in the Gripes! forum. I think it's useful to have an outlet for expressing strongly held beliefs as long as we abide by the rules against personal attacks, bigotry, etc. There are things I can say here that I wouldn't say, at least not so bluntly, in other discussion areas. If it comes off sounding like "I'm always right and you're always wrong", well that's a consequence of stating what you believe in and confonting contrary opinions. I hope we'll always have a place to discuss controversial topics.

Those who want only friendly banter or a "group hug" have a ready-made home in the Chit - Chat for Cruisers forum. If frank discussions offend them, they should probably post there rather than on the Gripes! board. I enjoy cruising more than posting in any forum, as I'm sure most of us do, but I welcome the opportunity to speak out on issues of concern to cruising here.
