As of April 14, 2005, you may no longer take a lighter aboard a plane. No lighters in your checked bags. No strike anywhere matches. Only books of matches? Later on the TSA is planning to ban any kind of matches on planes. Is it time to quit smoking or quit flying?

Someone already thought of that BEFORE they made the rule. Thats why they made it. Think of it. You just got off a transatlantic flight and have'nt had a smoke in seven hours and right there by the baggage pickup.......I'm there selling match books for $2.00 each. Great scam, wish I thought of it 1st.

So the TSA, are in the future going to ban all matches from flights? Will they have a machine to detect the matches? I can still remember flying when you were served a meal on the plane between Atlanta & NYC. The attendant took our drink orders at the door, on a 30 minute flight. Oh, that was the good old days. Am old or what???? Sorry I am having a senior moment.

Re original post, some of us out with the USA have been doing this already since 911,,,welcome to the real world. I cant smoke on the plane, so when flying I arrive having bought matches, dump them in the container, buy some more at the other end when I can smoke, no problem to us smokers. What do you think this is a problem?

geralyn, I can remember kids in high school smoking. There was a designated spot called the smoking tree. They were allowed to do this, & some of the teachers joined them. We also didn't have the worry about drugs guns & etc. jp

JP

I remember the school provided smoking area in the late 60ís and early 70ís very well. The teachers smoked in their own area. No drugs? The kids rolled their own smokes, not so much of those pre-rolled store bought ones if you catch my drift. The teachers were either clueless or just didn't care what we smoked.

We could also bring knifes to school as long as the blade did not exceed 4 or 5 inches. Where you ask? ( Arkansas) The land of opportunity.

Zack, I get the idea. I live in a small town & a lot of us, back then believed those things only happened in the big cities. So I would like to think our teachers were just clueless.

I also can remember when you could smoke on planes,I also remember when you could smoke in mcdonalds, and after a vacation to florida this past week driving from rhode island found that you can still smoke in mcdonalds in north carolina,so I guess smoke is not as much of a concern there.I live in rhode island where march 1st they past that no smoking law in any public places.I can see restaurants by all means no smoking, but to pass a law that you can't smoke in a bar is stupid.first of all any employee who works in a bar knows that, that is the enviorment and if smoke bothers them then guess what don't work there.as I said it just past march 1st and I have already seen three small bars close.so those people who worked in those bars don't have to worry about smoke any more but they also don't have to worry about a job either.I think this smoking thing is carried way to far.if I am out in an open area what is my smoke hurting but myself, but to pass laws that you can't smoke on a public beach or in a public part is totally bull....

paul1, I was aware of the smoking law in Fl. Have they extended it to the beaches? I agree with you. I believe a lot of the laws are silly. The time & money our law makers put into this could be spent more wisely.
I agree with you about smoking in bars, the over 21 crowd could make their own choice.

All of this comes from a small portion of the population wanting their way. Just like the ones that caused prayer to be banned from our school.

I read an editorial the other day. A non-smoker want a law banning people from smoking in their cars. How many cops would we need to enforce that one???? jp

I have never smoked, but I am with you guys in this. Banning smoking out in the open air or in a car seems like stupidity gone amok.

I realize that in most cities there will be smoke in bars or casinos. I might find it unpleasant at times, but if I chose to go duch places, then I can expect some smoke in the air.

I hope that you will always be free to smoke somewhere.

How can you ban smoking in a car? Now that's laws gone crazy!

What you smoke in a car and maybe have your window down theres a good chance your polluting others. Okay nearly going with the arguement.

But what happens if you are staying on the same street and have your house windows open and smoking?

As incredibly stupid as it sounds, they (you know those guys - "they") may make it illegal to smoke in your house. It is illegal to smoke pot in your house or in your car or anywhere!

I am not arguing in favour of smoking pot, haven't done that in years (and even when I did, I DID NOT inhale), but both seem equally harmful or harmless to me. -- actually pot may have some medicinal benefits ?!?

borntocruisejp - he did try to sell me a rolex, but I didn't want a porcelain rolex !!

It's not one of those BIG Cuban cigars is it?? Nevermind! I didn't ask that!

I took a flight a few months ago. After 4 security check points, I get home to find that I had a knife in my purse! Now, if they can't find a knife in my mess they certainly won't find my matches! <I'll be the one sweating at the security check point> hee hee

Happycruiser, You will may be checked thourghly, since the law goes into effect on the 14 of April. You may still carry books of matches, (2 I think). Just not boxes of the strike anywhere kind. We were on the Conquest in Jan.Had a great time. Hope you have a wonderful voyage!!!! I sail the Mariner 4-17. Planning to enjoy ourselves, REGARDLESS. Enjoy your posts... Check the TSA site for details.

According to the TSA web site 4 books of matches will be allowed. All lighters will be confiscated at the security check.

So.............why don't they just have a free exchange box. Smokers can smoke in the designated areas of the airport while waiting on their flight and before going through security they can drop their lighter in the box. Then on the other end they can pick one up out of the box. Problem solved!

Regards,
Thomas

Oh yeah! I almost forgot batteries!!

What in the world is the difference between the "strike anywhere" and a regular book of matches? Don't they both make a flame? Who is coming up with these laws? Just one man out of millions decides to take a blow up shoe onto a flight and we're not allowed to wear Reboks!!

. . . whew . . I just gotta breathe!
