Default People of "large size"

My DH and I will be taking our first cruise in a few weeks, and I owe a large debt to this site. I've learned so much about cruising that I feel I've taken 3 before. I've been following the gripes, really get a kick out of some, but some common themes continue to pop up like tipping, drinking, smoking and obese people. Is there something to this I don't understand. Being from the south, I am considered a "healthy heifer". Do I need to stay home because I am? Is the whole cruise going to be whispers and stares? I've never let my weight get in the way of anything I've wanted to accomplish, but the cruisers are making me feel I need to rethink my vacation plans. Tell me it's not so.

No! No! and No! Don't worry about a thing. They come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities and walks of life. My dh and I sat each night in the bar a watched the line ups of the ones that "didn't want to miss dinner so they lined up an hour before the dining room opened." What did they think - someone was going to give the food away?
We only noticed how varied the outfits were - even on formal nights their were jeans and t-shirts and cut-offs and halter tops along with formals and tuxes. We honestly could not tell you what one individual actually looked like - except maybe the guy on formal night in his daisy dukes (yes really), cropped t-shirt and cowboy hat! If you dress like that people will stare lol. Go, enjoy, be comfortable and happy. We also took note of the sourpusses - the ones that would not have a good time no matter what. They were the funniest. Have a great cruise and if we are on the same ship - come and join us! TTFN Jennifer

I'm sure you guys work hard and look forward to vacations like everyone else. You go and enjoy yourselves and let the narrow-minded, ignorant, self-righteous waste their energies concerning themselves with your physical appearance. I'm sure that noone is perfect. If you are happy with yourself and treat people with kindness and compassion no matter what then that is all that should matter. Have a fabulous cruise!!!

As you are living your life in the place you reside you are in contact with the same type of small minded persons, but give them little thought due to never speaking to them again if they have to feel important by making others feel bad to do so. Being a southern person you must know what I am speaking about. Do not let the rude people cause you one second of hesitation about going on this cruise. Go, enjoy, have fun, and ignore anyone that is rude to you.

At some point in my life someone shared a truth with me that I will never forget. "There are two ways to have the tallest building in town...You can work hard and put your heart and soul into building it taller than those that came before, or you can knock down all of the buildings around you."
If by chance you should ever in your life encounter someone who feels the need to whisper and stare, you should take some satisfaction in knowing that is just a pitiful way for them to try in vain to elevate themselves at the expense of others. How sad it must be, to be them.
As far as anyone's weight issues, chances are that with a lot of hard work and effort, they have the potential to lose weight. But those who ridicule, whisper and stare are even more unattractive than any of those they choose to critisize, even though they hide their ugliness on the inside.
Go have fun, enjoy yourself. If anyone dares to look at you in a disparaging manner, then focus all the compassion you can muster and try to feel sorry for them.

jerijohn, I totally agree with Jen, go, have a great time. I am also a "Southern Belle". The only strange looks I have recieved were when I ordered Grits at breakfast. . Our tablemates wanted to know what they were....You will meet people from all walks of life & nations. If you basically adhere to the dress codes no one will stare. I agree with Jen, we too like to sit in the bar & watch folks. As for formal night you will see all kinds. But I have yet to see anyone turned from the dining room, because of dress. By the way you did not mention your ship or port. Let me know if I can help you in any way. Beware one cruise is never enough, you will want to go again & again & again........... Happy cruising. Let us hear your thoughts now.

You should go to the mall in your home town and sit there for an hour and observe all the people who walk by. This is what you'll see on the cruise. It's no different and if you don't feel out of place in the mall you won't feel out of place on the ship. Like jp said, if you follow the dress code nobody will even notice you.

Regards,
Thomas

Default fat people

This subject has come up before & I enjoyed it then also.
I also order grits for breakfast, they are only available in the dining room.

A long time ago I posted a photo of Joemo, my baby girl, and
What's Her Name to show we can have a good time.

jerijohn--go on your cruise and have a great time. While my children were growing up, I tried to instill one lesson in their minds about life----I told them every morning to get up and look in the mirror. If they liked what they saw, then it didn't matter what other people thought of them. They had to like themselves first.----To this day, they still do it but not as often since they are busy with college classes.

You seem to have the right attitude judging by your comment of not letting your weight stop you from accomplishing anything. I hope you have a wonderful and safe first cruise.

Well now I'm ready to kick butt and take names! It would take 4 skinny people to sit on me to keep me home now. It must just be the small narrow minded size 2 and 4's that want to run us "healthy" one's down. I have never been small. I went to kindergarten big, and have remained that way. I've married(twice, but who's counting), have grown children and hold a management position at work. I really don't think that much about my weight, I've never been any other way. It's just me. When I read the message boards and kept running into the threads on obese passengers, a sliver of doubt crossed my mind. But no more. Thank You. We will be sailing on the Sensation out of New Orleans the 23rd. I'll be the big one in the flowered shirt having the time of her life.

before our first cruise 4 years ago,my wife who is not fat(to me anyway) worked out at the gym and must hvae done 5 different diets saying she was to fat to go on a cruise.well she did lose a little weight and firmed up a few areas, but once sail day came and she seen the rest of the passengers I told her see you did all that for no reason.I mean she felt better about herself but she then realized she did not need to do it for anyone else

I only have *2* major problems w/overweight people....

1) Those who MAKE their kids fat! My hubby & I were at Universal Studios awhile ago, and there was 2 hispanic ladies who had the FATTEST little girl with them..she couldn't have been more than 5 years old, but she was so incredibly FAT, she looked like she was going to explode at any minute! And what is she eating?? Cotton Candy!! And if one of the ladies tried to get some, she would scream her head off! I think those people should be charged w/child abuse, personally....

2) People who are overweight who don't dress accordingly! No one watns to see you in tight fitting clothes that shows every roll of fat that you have! Or blouses that are too short. I am not a skinny minnie, but I don't announce it for everyone to see...

Other than that, overweight people can be some of the nicest, most compassionate people I have ever met, it's true that looks are ONLY skin deep!

On our first cruise in '92, I was 49, and we took a ship/itinerary frequented by younger adults. I wasn't overweight (then) but age was showing. Oh, well, I looked forward to seeing all those bikini-clad model types around the pool. WRONG! They were overweight, and out of shape like me! Now, at 62, I AM overweight (being 62 will do that to you). We usually take lines and itineraries that attract an older crowd like us. On our last cruise, I would place the percent of guests who were overweight according to those charts the doctors have at a flat 100% (including me). Those hollywood and model types you see in the lines' brochures --- well they are only in the brochures and certainly not onboard! So if you are overweight (like me) the best place you can go is on a cruise. You will have plenty of company --- some of whom may even make you feel slim---- and you'll have a chance to quit worring about being overweight!

Thanks,
Richard

I'm really just trying to loose the baby fat I gained with my last pregnancy. I don't mention the fact that I'm 48 and my baby is 26. That fact is besides the point if you ask me.

I'm still baffled at why this is even an issue on this mb, and I'm sorry, JeriJohn, that you were made to feel unwelcome. I've noticed a couple comments about it in the past. I don't get it. Weight is a very personal issue that's best left to the individual to deal with one way or another. And how can it actually offend someone??? People come in all shapes and sizes, but I believe it's the size of their hearts we should all be concerned with. Jerijohn, I hope you have the time of your life on you cruise!!

I'm so glad that I'm PERFECT!!!!! Beautiful long legs, tan, blonde hair (naturally curly), tall, thin. I look just like those ladies in the brochures!

Oh, wait - it must be the chardonnay - I'm a size 16 and not really a size 6. Maybe my hair is fake blonde. Yep, that's it - it's the chardonnay.

I've been on over 25 cruises and I've been a bit of a Midwestern/Belgian (not skinny!) every time and I've had a ball. People who count don't care what you weigh. GO - HAVE A BALL - ENJOY!!!!

crusin'meme, Come on, wake up & smell the cigarette smoke!!!! Some cronic gripers get offended if people don't appear in the dining room, get in line early for the dining room, smoke in their rooms, smoke on the balcony, don't tip, hog the chairs, are too thin, take their meds at the table, order more than one entree, talk with a mouth full, wear thongs or speedos & of course being too fat!!! . Did I miss anything? Of course, none of these have a mite to do with the Cronic COMPLAINERS vacation but, alas, We give them something to COMPLAIN about and ruin their vacation!!!!!

You are soooo, right about the size of the heart. It matters not one iota to me the size of the person. Its the positive attitudes that attract me.

Happy crusin' all & keep those gripes coming in.

Love the babyfat line - I'll have to remember that one. As one heifer to another you'll just be one of the herd. And that "too fat to cruise" stuff is all "bull" lol. My dh always says he would rather hug a pillow than a stick. I love that man! TTFN Jennifer

I prefer to eat sensibly and exercise regularly to maintain my boyish figure and offset all the bad things I do such as excessive drinking and smoking. I could be fat if I want but I have a choice. If you want to overeat and lead a sedentary lifestyle that is up to you. It doesn't bother me.

Hey jerijohn - one of the most important things in life is to be comfortable with yourself. Self-confidence is accepting yourself the way you are, and if others don't like how you look, sit on them.

you have to be real careful and not prejudge people because of their weight. I have a friend who is normally very thin who in recent years developed a medical condition, which requires daily medication that has added a significant amount of weight on her. It was take the medicine and deal with the side effects or die

After a great deal of coaxing, I was able to convince her to go on a cruise (she loves cruising), but she was concern about how other people would react (she actually weighted as much as I did). What she found out was that 95% of the passengers did not care !!!!!

Jenjohn, dont take what you read on here as cruising, make your own mind up.

Personally,,I've yet to meet the person on ship who can claim

I have the perfect weight
I have the perfect body
I do not smoke
I do not drink
I do not gamble in the Casino
I do not hog the line
I do not bore everyone by always talking about me
My actions or reactions do not infringe on anyone else
I do everything in perfection that everyone loves

Actually for me someone like that would be the biggest pain in the ass and I would not want them on my table, why? Because they are so up their own A, its a wonder their head comes over the table! ,,,and I guess boring as a person

People are people, shapes, colors, views. Thats what makes the cruising experience for me. So people stop hitting or snipping at what is an easy target.

Being large does not make you a bad person, I've met many skinny runts that I would not give the time of day to, never mind want to cruise with.
