Will, this is a very interesting topic, and I think it would get a lot of good responses if you posted it in Chit Chat.

I was on all 3 Carnival ships that you mentioned in the 80's and I agree 100% with your MIL..it was alot of fun, very low expectations and they delivered..it was a great time

1983 Rotterdam, 1984 Nieu Amsterdam. Gorgeous ships (not yet floating Vega hotels with purple rugs, pink chairs and chartreuse drapes; LSD inspired) Big fantails, classic liners. But, basically the same old tired third world Caribbean Ports as today which all seem the same. Tee shirt shops, tacky souviners, rip off jewelry, beautiful beaches and scenery. I cruise for the ships and to be at sea. The ports are insignificant to me.

But at least then Slovinski you did not have four ships in port dumping over 10 - 15 thousand people at the same time!

That is true DavidB and that's a pain, yet the upside is being able to see the other ships close up. Unless the port is new to me or I have a favorite spot to go, I just stay onboard or get off long enough to grab a couple six packs of Root Beer and hop back on.
