Sorry bud cant help, but I appreciate your thoughts and they made me think back and again to when I was there.

What I will say is that for most of us "oldies", experience says you take a price and then cruise based on "what you actually want or payed for" and from that experience accept it and then get on with it.

That scenario means you jump in.... take a cabin at that moment in time when you are ready to hand over your money.... and now your vacation is booked andjust look forward to it.

Just live with that and what your going to get at that moment in time for the money.. its a gamble on price paid,, accept that!

For example....the DW and I got a balcony cabin on a RCCI ship, exactly 6 weeks before sailing, the price suited us....But....some really nice and organised people we met at our dining table, paid $100 more than us p/p for an inside cabin 8 months before .

Its a chance, and a lottery. There is no logic as these people 8 months before "thought" they had got a "deal" based on their need for the ship at that time and its pricing and of course a lot of TA/Line "spin" re deals.

Thats why I never pre book any cruise a year or more in advance at the "desk" on the ship or line that I like,,,that fools gold, and I've never met anyone who actually got a deal out of it worth doing or having.
Discount levels that far in advance are lets say "basic".

In the cruise world there is "nothing" worse than sitting at a table or bar and talking to people that are sitting beside you for $xxx less and in better cabins, and they did it at the nearly last minute.

Personally, it's a no win situation, but its part of the "cruise" learning curve, you take care and forget the money. just enjoy your vacation.

And before I am reminded , the same thing goes for "guaranteed upgrades".... there is no such animal, that's spin as in reality and you pay, live and learn. You pay either for it or are very lucky to find one for free at the bottom of the rainbow....myth

Yes...yes...yes. We always book the cabin we want at the price we are willing to pay.

Not all upgrades are great...and we've made it a point to never discuss cruise prices with anyone ON the cruise. We want to be happy with what we got...not looking to what 'Could have been'.

For me, this is the same as anything I buy that is not a necessity. If it is something I want at a price I can afford, I buy it. The end. No angst over whether I got the best deal possible. We have friends who are constantly on the "good deal" wagon. If I can't afford something, then it is not a good deal FOR ME. If I can and decide to go for it and someone else gets a better deal, good for them. That's not to say that I don't shop around or check to see if the price drops, but I don't see the sense in taking some of the joy out of it by worrying about the competitive one downmanship of having paid the least.

Maybe the cruiselines should do like the airlines ...the ealier you book the best price you get.
As the date approaches departure the price goes up.

If everyone gets the new price the cruiselines have to make up the difference somplace..eg: food quality

It sort of penalizes people for booking early & they have your money earning interest.
Just my 2 cents

Great post Marty.. so the answer is take your chance at that moment in time, pay for it and go and enjoy your cruise.

If not.... then as a person you will not always think on the plus side ie , yes I'm here and try to enjoy, but you could have done it cheaper this experience, so you dont enjoy , get over it and enjoy your vacation.

BUT, and I have a Big butt

lulu48, that's what they actually present when offering deals, but in reality it does not happen. There is a big difference from filling 200 seats on a plane to 3,000 on a ship. But agreed they have got their pricing policy for early bookers into reality.

Yes. give the people that book a year or so in advance the best ever discount available and not based on a count down for sold or not sold cabins X months later via TA's until sailing.

If these people are putting their hard earned cash up front, they should get the best discounts available for that ship. But that does not happen as they have to please the TA's and their expected mark up on the price you pay.

If they offer a better discount to those booking before 90 days of the cruise then up the price.
People would soon get use to booking early .
I am sure the TA would rather get commission on a $2000. booking than on $399. booking.

If there are still cabins unsold a week or two before sailing then go ahead and offer them at a discount.
People are getting use to waiting for the deal and the cruise line loses, the passengers lose in quality of service , food etc...

Oh well it will probably never happen that way so I will move on!

Yes people are taking time as to when they book, good... but I dont agree with that determines quality of service or the food that the whole ship eats, thats nonsense.

As the ship will sail with the same menu and service whether sold out six months in advance or the last minute and half empty

Sure they will sail with the same menu/service ...you missed my point
The qualityof the food is not like it used to be .
We found on some lines the food was not that good anymore!

I got your point, and that is not what I read into your post., ie a food gripe 8)

If you are complaining that the service and food standard has decreased in bulk cruising over the past years, then I would agree on some lines but not others as they have pushed food quality as a reason to be there,,pick the right line

But it's not because of when people book or what they paid for as individuals that determine's food quality

Food quality and service CAN also depend on the 'ship'!

We've had wonderful food and service on RCCI ...AND 'some pretty standard' cruise fare and service' on RCCI. The difference? The ship!

Same with Celebrity and HAL (although, not as much with HAL)

It's been our experience...albeit not extensive....that it's not always the 'Cruise Line'....but also the cruise ship's officer's, staff, crew, Chief Chef, THAT determine a lot about our cruise experience.

I'm a little late into this thread, but I would be interested to understand what the motivation would be to book a inside gaurantee way in advance? I've never booked an inside cabin or a guarantee before and never really paid much attention to them. Do they generally sell out quickly?

It seems to me that booking early would benefit you only if you wanted a particular cabin or category that tends to sell out early.

Would you go back to that car dealer and demand a $4000 refund because they were selling the same model for $4000 less, at the very end of the model year, than what you paid? I doubt it.

I tend to be a last minute shopper and with cruises it's sometimes good. But it all depends on what you want. For me, I don't care where I sleep or shower and I sleep like a rock, once I fall to sleep so... my thinking is.. if the bed is soft and the water is hot, give me that cabin.

My experience with booking last minute.. 5 Night Cruise $249PP and 3 Night Cruise $199PP.... However; when I do that, I usually end up paying more for a flight... so.. I guess it all evens out..

I have booked 3 cruises to date and have had different experiences with each booking. The first booking was an inside guarantee with Princess and I booked more than 6 months in advance. My TA encouraged me to book early because Princess is notorious for giving nice upgrades and early booking promotions. I booked the category M (Gala deck 4) and was assigned a cabin in category I, midship (Aloha deck 12) plus we got a $50 cabin credit. It was perfect....away from all the hustle and bustle of the crew, dining rooms, etc. We discovered that people on the same deck had paid much more for their rooms and I did not have the heart to tell them about the great deal we got.

The second booking was with Royal Caribbean, 3 months in advance with limited rooms available in the category I was seeking. I prefer to be midship so we chose a stateroom. With such a small inventory left, I did not want to take a chance of being placed in a stateroom near the kitchen or forward so we booked a cabin in the location we wanted. They threw in a $100 casino credit just for grins and giggles. Not a bad deal. I don't gamble but I hope to cash in the chips for stateroom credit.

The third cruise with Princess was again booked on a guarantee. With so much time left between now and August, we are guaranteed to get a good room this far out. Although we haven't received a bump in category upgrades (inside to outside or balcony to suite) we do enjoy knowing that early booking discounts do exist and take advantage of them when we can. I look forward to getting the cabin assignment.

I really depends on inventory, timing and your preferences. I hope this helps.

IF you want a guarantee of a specific cabin or deck...you should just book it outright. There are NO guaranteed bumps in categories, upgrades etc.

My sister, her husband, my husband and I all won the upgrade lottery when we both booked regular cabin's with veranda's and BOTH got upgraded to beautiful junior suites right next door to each other, in the middle of the ship on the perfect deck! It was a fluke...we enjoyed it, but don't expect it to ever ever happen again.

In time, you may find like other experience cruisers have, that not all upgrades turn out to be the upgrade that dreams are made of!

Be happy with the cabin and price you paid at the time you book your cruise, because anything above that is cream.

But no matter what you your final cabin assignment...enjoy your cruise!
