"There is really nothing you can do to stop it you just have let it take its course and keep yourself hydrated."

Agreed as a person I have no control over other peoples personal hygeine standards, but the ships can help. Did they have hand wash sanitisers at food stations with staff "enforcing" people use them? On that ship?

On my last cruise on the Dawn Princess, the hand sanitizer hung discretely on the wall off to the side of the buffet and its use was OPTIONAL. I like this because I prefer to wash my hands the old-fashioned way, with soap and water, and always do so before eating. It is the most effective way to kill both bacterial and viral germs (especially norovirus, which hand sanitizers are ineffective against).

I have been on other ships where the sanitizers are placed front and center at the entrance to the buffet and you had to endure the glares of other passengers if you didn't use it. Or worse, a staff member is positioned at the head of the line to "remind" people to sanitize. On these ships, I have become an expert at "faking" the machine by putting my hands underneath and then pulling them away a split second before the liquid squirts outs.

As a society, I think we have become too obsessed with trying to eliminate all germs in our environment through the use of sanitizers and disinfectants. I think this is harming us in the long-term, both because of the potential for the creation of supergerms and because it cripples our bodies own natural ability to fight disease. I prefer to limit my use of these products and I hate to have them shoved down my throat by the cruiselines!

I agree with almost everything you say.
If you wash your hands in the restroom then you have to use the door handle to leave....hoping those before you washed their hands.

If you wash in your cabin then you have all kinds of surfaces to contact on your way to eat.

Handsanitizers r a big help against viruses on ships.

I just discovered this on John Healds blog....
Now, onto the dreaded word…………………….Norwalk Virus. There seems to be a perception that this can only occur on a cruise ship. Can you give us your perspective on this and what cruise ship guests should do to try and prevent this from happening to them? Now we call it Noro, the citizens of Norwalk, Connecticut got a little ticked off at continually being associated with diarrhea and vomiting! It is the most common cause of gastro-enteritis or “stomach flu? in the world. Probably 30 - 40 million shoreside cases a year in the US alone. If guests frequently wash their hands, especially before eating, smoking (if they really cannot give up), putting on make up or touching their mouths for any reason, we would have far less cases. Folks also need to understand that the alcohol-based hand gels are also pretty ineffective in killing Noro, because they evaporate before they can kill the virus. We are in the process of trialing a new disposable hand wipe, which we believe will be far more effective than the alcohol based gels.

So maybe there is some progree made here.

It should be mandatory in all places that the "public" dine at buffet, and that means all ships, hotels and restaurants.

Better two seconds cleansing your hands., than two days in your bed or the toilet
You will also notice that carnival is "serving" the buffet food instead of the guests touching the utensels. That just started a little over a year ago.

"That just started a little over a year ago."

And so did my post, happy birthday to it..

Pleased to see that we do not allow the great unwashed to touch food or play, pick and mix, take out, put back in (gross) on Carnival's buffet.

But can you still call it a buffet? Or is it now served in a less informal dining situation? , but pleased the dirty buggers are now out of my line for potentially touching food, ignore it, and then expect ME to eat it after their prodding.

GO wash your HANDS,,oh and please cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough. Half of the ships problems today regarding onboard health would be covered if only people did that.

I loved that Celebrity Constellation actually had the wipes at the buffet line-but unfortunately they had the gel at the dinningroom. I prefer the wipes. They are so much nicer to me and I feel my hands are cleaner using them.
