i feel the need to correct this line as well...a true paddlewheeler is indeed steam powered as well, they use steam driven turbines to turn the paddlewheel...

the paddlewheel is not like a mill wheel that is driven by water...theyre like steam driven oars

If I step onto it off the pier and it moves, it is a boat; if it doesn't, it is a ship.....

Back in school my English teacher told me the English language is the most difficult to learn bacause it is so confusing.Looking at my Carnival and Royal Caribbean books they refer to them as ships.

I got dizzy reading this thread.

But, just look how people mis-use the word 'myself' then you'll understand a ship is a boat. Just ask any sailer.

Thats a great line

Bobby G

"But, just look how people mis-use the word 'myself' then you'll understand a ship is a boat. Just ask any sailer"

Not asking this for "myself", but did you mean "sailor" as in the person or a craft with the ability to sail, ie a sailer.

Why Paul 8) It is addressing a point that people could be losing sleep over.

So many confused newbies out there... "God, have I booked a boat or a ship" for our vacation.

We cannot hide these things from the public if that is where opinion is, no matter the other choices they have to debate 8)

I'm going to change my references to 'cruise boat' instead of 'cruise ship'.
Would sort of be different wouldn't it.

Well Bob,

That's already been done before, it was called "The Love Boat" and it ran on ABC from 1977 till 1986 and continued past that in sindication.

So as I said before, a ship is still a boat, may irritate some but hey, there is only one right and I have spoken!

Hey Bob,

I know it's a joke , I've been laughing ever since this thread started. After all it is quite funny to think someone would have a problem with other people using a term which is correct , definitely makes me laugh. 8)

Everything is cool Bill. And I agree, but it isn't near as ridiculous as one person wanting a cruise line to quit letting older passengers sail so his age group can get his cruise line back.

Old gripes don't die ... they just go to page 2 ... until a year later, someone resurrects it!

Do you think this one will actually make it to page 2?

Okay, those of you who have served us in the Armed Forces-if you carried a sidearm, did you carry a gun or a weapon? Is there a difference ?

I agree with Matlily: You can put a boat on a ship, but you can't put a ship on a boat !

We were taught to refer to them as a weapon rather than gun.

A weapon can be anything used for defense or offense, like a knife, bat, etc. A gun is a weapon itself but can be used for non-weaponry purposes.

*opening another can of worms and besides, I'm just messing with ya!*

So if a floating vessel is referred to as a "boat" or a "ship", what is a "tub" (no fat jokes allowed).

Heck, I tried to make a page 3 but I didn't......

I just remember this from my ROTC friends: "Here is my weapon (pointing to the sidearm), and here is my gun (pointing to "something else"), one is for fighting, the other's for fun" !

Okay, I'm old, but I think this has been around for a long time!

What we learned was that a "gun" was something like a cannon, a weapon was something you could carry (a knife, bat, sidearm, etc.).

The thread lives !!!

I'd use my light saber, but it is in the shop for service--faulty laser beam...

Hmm, we could zap it with some electricity and it would do it in...a power surge is a reall data killer!

I need to do a euolgy for this post, so please, leave me to think of one...

A cruise ship is a "ship" it has decks, not floors and cabins not rooms.

You might be a redneck if you are heard saying,

"Hey, yall, what floor is your room on, on this boat"
