Does it really matter what you call it if it is big, floats. has wonderful accomodations, great food and moves you to where you want to go?

Ah it's no fun giving you a hard time when you just agree with me. I'll try this one: The best Martinis are made with Vodka not Gin. My Favorite is the Chocolate Martini. Okay let me have it.

My what wonderful and carefree lives we lead when we can devote so much time and energy to somthing so trivial.

Find somthing more important to worry about folks, like which cruise to where do we want to take next?

WOW...I was in the Navy and we called the ship a boat because we were tired of saying ship. We were clearly a ship...It was a Guided Missle Destroyer with several ways to turn your world upsidedown. When we went to shore...it was on the liberty boat that was attached to the killing war ship..gasp...there is that word again. If im in a huge gray vessel floating on the water and have enough ammo to knock you clear to china and back, then you must call it a ship if I say so. Its called a war ship, not a war boat. Hey wait...were we talking about cruise ships? Guess I got off track.

I'll give this thread a little twist.
I work with USN personnel all the time.
My personal experiences (and a retired Skipper for a father) have shown that sailors will call their ship a boat but prefer that civillians still call it a ship... and I can see their point.

Wanna drive a sailor nuts? Refer to a porthole as a window; call a bulkhead a wall; they're ladders, not stairs...etc.

In the RN a vessel above the waves is called a ship, one below the waves is a boat, hence the term u-boat. Cruise ships were allways referred to as passenger liners. As long as it do'snt sink who cares.

So are you saying a cruise boat above the waves is a ship but if it sinks it's a u-boat. Oh and Never Declaw your cat. That is what my kitty Elwood told me.

I'm confused....

"In the RN a vessel above the waves is called a ship, one below the waves is a boat, hence the term u-boat. Cruise ships were allways referred to as passenger liners. As long as it do'snt sink who cares".

The only vehicle on the sea that I have ever been on or seen that was "above the waves" was a hovercraft.

That was good gripes advice, if you want to be above the waves, cruise on a hovercraft...

Yes but would that be a hovership or a hoverboat? and isn't an airplane also a vessel that is "above the waves."

Honestly Katlady, it is always my wish when boarding a plane that it stays well above the waves. But I could never "cruise" on one.

Port time is short enough without the plane captain announcing..."oh we just passed over Grand Cayman,… those on the right may have seen it"

My DH (a Navy man-ahem) explained the difference like this.
You can put a boat on a ship, but, you can't put a ship on a boat.

I am all set on which cruise to take and when. I have a cruise this month, two more booked and two others planed. And they are all on cruise ships not cruise boats.

Kat if you get on a boat that means your ship has sunk.

They can call it a raft for all I care, as long as it comes with room service!

Kat, to me it's a ship, but the main thing is that we enjoy all our cruises.

Default This Is Getting Boring!

This forum of cruise gripes is getting boring, let's bring up something really important like whether it's a ship or a boat. Personally I thing a ship is still a boat!
