Default Washing hands after using the restroom. A Poll

1 in 3 men don't wash after bathroom visit

Number of those who don't scrub up on rise, study finds

I found this to be an interesting article. They did surveys it seems in restrooms in major cities and in sports stadiums. They make no mention of cruise ships but I wonder if the results would be similar.

Let's see

I would have to say it depends on what I am doing and where I am. SO I have to admit that sometimes that answer is no. You just never know when that will be.....

So far the results are exactly the same as the MSN story. 1 out of three don't.

You are right Doug. I realized after I post it that I could have made more then two choices.

Just thought of another response:

-Only when someone is watching

Can you tell its slow at work today?

Usually I don't if I am outdoors or if I am going back in the pool anyway. If I am in a restaurant and going back to the table, then I usually do. If I took a shower recently, then I don't usually need to unless I get some on my hands like Doug said.

Default This reminds me of a true story

On my last cruise while in the dining room, I noticed all the waiters had a string hanging from their fly. I became curious and asked the waiter what it was for.

He told me, "Royal Caribbean had done some time management studies and found that during dinner while we are serving food and have to use the men's room, we can save time by not washing our hands. We pull it out with the string, let it hang out and then don't need to wash out hands."

That made sense to me. After a little while I also noticed that all the waiters had a spoon in the breast pocket. When he returned to the table with my filet, I asked about about the spoon.

He said, "In the study they also found the most common eating utensil dropped on the floor is the spoon. By keeping an extra one in our pocket, we save time by not having to run back to the server station."

This also made a lot of sense to me as I am always amazed at the efficiency of these waiters and all the people they have to serve.

When he came back the next time with my ice cream it had occurred to me that if they pull it out with the string, how do they get it back in??

When I asked him this, he looked around, leaned over to me and whispered.....

"I don't know about the rest of the guys, but I usually use the spoon."

It was then that I dropped my spoon to the floor in disbelief and as he reached to his pocket to get me another one, I said, "No thanks, I can get it and reached under the table to retieve my spoon."

I am freak when it comes to washing my hands. I wash them every time after bathroom break and even when they feel grimy. I don't touch handles or doorknobs without a towel, and I never take the mints out of the baskets in restaurants-eeeeeewwwwww urine-mints! And I don't think twice about reporting workers I see in a bathroom that don't wash their hands to their managers....

BTW, I'm a nurse. It comes with the territory... lol.

I'm not a nurse but I do just as you said. All the time and when they feel grimy. I even wash them with the alcohol based cleaner when I place gasoline in my car. And, after I shake hands with someone, I will not touch my face or amy membranes until I wash my hands.

I am so careful about washing my hands every time I go to the bathroom and also use the hand sanitizers constantly. I even press the elevator buttons with my knuckle to keep from touching them. Most people don't realize this, but it is recommended that when you wash your hands in the bathroom, you should press the paper dispenser handle down to dispense your paper, then wash your hands and dry them. You then use the paper towel to turn off the faucet and open the door. Probably recommended because of all the people who touch these things and don't wash their hands.

And I totally won't NOT use a towel to open the door...and like one of my professors said, if they weren't smart enough to place the trash can close to the door and I miss, tough luck.

Don't get me wrong, I am all about not littering and picking up things so others don't have to, I carry my own dishes to the buckets on the Lido deck if I can...

But if it becomes between me and touching a door handle bare handed, I win every time....

I have to say I am surprised by the results. I guess cruisers on average are cleanlier than the general population. Most votes are for washing them most of the time.

There are not enough votes for a scientific survey but I wonder who voted no.

and now Carnival has installed towellette dispensers at the doorway in the restrooms so you do not have to touch the door handle with your clean hands... cool - if there is not a dispenser I usually use my elbow - the dirtiest part of a restroom is the doorknobs, handles, etc...

Folks, you can get way too wackadoodle over this and end up like the guy I used to work with in NY:

He would wash his hands before using the toilet and then put on rubber gloves, spray the seat with lysol and wipe it down, remove gloves and wash hands again, put on new gloves and leave restroom. He also wore surgical masks (no he did not have any known disease) outside. He sprayed his desk with lysol multiple times in a day, would not handle any paperwork with his bare hands, and would not eat any food that he didn't prepare.

It is also postulated that our obsession with cleanliness, especially with increased use of things like anti-bacterial soaps may lead to the development of dangerous "superbugs" and our kids may be losing natural immunities becuase they are not being exposed as much.

The old joke when the guy came to the Doctor with a case of veneral disease:

Doctor: I need the name and address of the person you caught this from.
Patient: I must of caught it from a toilet seat.
Doctor: Then I need the name and address of the toilet seat.

So anyway, be clean but not obssesive.

Your body is supposed to have natural defenses against germs. I have been eating off the floor and using the restroom without washing my hands for years and I never, ever get sick. I have not even had a cold in years even when every one sels at work has a cold or flu.

Yes, some are overly obsessed.

I grew up on the good old farmstead and hand washing was routine, ESPECIALLY after you went to the bathroom. It isn't what was in the cow's gut that would really hurt you, if you are exposed to it, it's what's in the human gut and feces.

It was ingrained in us to wash your "damn hands", even after taking a whiz, and it stuck.

In my high school and college years I worked in three kitchens, the first was a dump and latter were higher end. The dump didn't give a damn if you scratched yourself and then tasted the sauce but the higher end, while having some of the nastiest looking cooks, would make damn sure you washed. If you didn't you were dunked. "Thrown in the pot and pan sink during service and humiliated."

The truth is that even on your "oh so clean wonker" there is staph and on some people enough shmegma (I could use another term but won't) to choke a horse. This stuff is friggin nasty and spreads the above mentioned staph, strep and some other stuff I won't go into. Granted, some folks are fairly clean but, then again, everyone says they are and they say they "never touch it anyway". How the hell do they get the damn thing in and out? Does it do other tricks? Roll over? Play dead? Well, I guess that's why they made V iagra. What about those couple of drops that come out of nowhere? Ah what the hell, it's just pee.

Not washing after "number two" spreads everything from, whatever ailment you have to e-coli, noro, staff, fungus and more. I'd rather eat a steak that hit the floor and had a ten second fryer bath than shake hands with some jerk who didn't wash his freaking hands after taking a crap.

I have been unusually blunt here but this one hits home, especially for cruisers. You are in a contained environment where close contact is not only normal but required and something as easy as hand washing can stop that spread in its tracks. I agree that we have become a nation of clean freaks but when it comes to sh** and pi** we need to be.

You may say that all this doesn't apply to you and that you are clean and you may be absolutely right but believe me there are a hell of a lot of others who are far from clean, especially below the belt.

Take care,
Mike

The most germs are found on grocery shopping cart that's why I let my hubby do the grocery shopping. Isn't that nice of me.

Always! And I must say that I've seen many women leave the public ladies rooms without washing their hands---it's not just the men! I'm not obsessive, but I do wash my hands after being in public places, before I eat or cook, and after using the toilet. That's just plain good hygiene for anyone to follow.

Not obsessed with cleanliness, but washing hands is just good hygiene. Whether something says "antibacterial" or not has no effect on me. Soap is soap.

I am all for children playing in dirt and ocean and sand and whatever else...but they sure wash their hands before they eat and after they go to the bathroom!
