I like to think of my tattoo as an Identifying Mark in case I go missing. Plus I think it's pretty. Mine is not a tramp stamp those are nice through. The movie "Wedding Crashers" has a funny scene about the tramp stamp. I don't care what anybody does to their body. I saw and older lady (mid 50s) in church with great legs and a beautiful tattoo on her calf. I don't think I would get the breast tattoo because of the sag issue the tiny butterfly would turn into an eagle in a few years. I don't have kids, some tattoos with swear words or ladies missing clothes maybe an issue for parents.

I tend to think of them as somewhat sleazy. I figure if a girl will get a tattoo, it is a statement that there is nothing she won't do. That is just my perception and experience but I am sure I am not alone.

I'm sleazy with my hubby and he likes it that way. At Least I wash my damn hands.

Very humorous banter! I don't have any tatoos...I almost had a yellow rose on my shoulder when I was about 22....but don't regret turning chicken. Whatever "floats your boat"....I'm intrigued by many tatoos on people and often ask them about the design they chose.

I find that most of the people that want to gripe about a tat are the ones with the belly hanging over the waist band, the flab on the arms and the cottage cheese running up and down thier legs. And they like to show off all this wonderful flesh by squeezing it into a speedo or bikini. Now that is truly offensive and it should be illegal!

From Dave's pic, he does not seem to have that problem, but many others do. For everyone else, before you b**ch about my tattoo, drop 10 or 75 pounds.

BTW, my tattoo comes from my many years as a US of A Navy man. I bear the pride of that service in the form of a tattoo commemorating my service. If you don't like it, too darned bad. Anchors Aweigh!!!!

OK, for the record I will say I really don't care if people have tattoos or not, it is their body and they can do as they please. In fact as I've said before I like the tramp stamp on a woman, it's kind of sexy.

The only reason I started this thread was to liven things up on this board and that it has done! 8)

Ok, NVA, I have a small confession too. Has anyone seen that show Miami Ink? The program is about a tattoo parlor and the 'art' the various people have imbeded in thier bodies. Some of the artists are incredible.

But the point is, there is one young woman named Kat. She is a very attractive young girl but she is covered in tattoos. OMG, she looks like an explosion at a paint factory! One or two conservative tats are ok by me, but anything overdone is just garish.

BTW, my tattoo is one my leg where it is easily hidden at a more formal event. Done that way on purpose.

The tattoos don't bother me as much as the large fat ladies who insist on wearing a two piece bikini.

It looks like two rubber bands on an egg.

And then there guys who go topless and need a bra.

Or the men who wear a thong and convince themselves we are staring at them out of lust or envy, when in reality we have just experienced the real meaning of “shock and awe?.

Wait, what was the topic, tattoos? Oh, those are ok I guess.

I must confess that I really don't understand tattoos. Once, they were worn only by bikers and former prison inmates. Now the bikers are my multi-multi millionaire neighbors (which I am not), and the president of our local Mercedes Benz Club is also a Harley biker (though he seems to have no tattoos). And I know people with tattoos who have never been in prison -- and never even spent a night in jail. Me? I don't want any. If you come at me with a needle, you've got a problem -- even if it's is to give me a flu shot!

But nobody appointed me as the "culture police." Instead, I follow a somewhat libertarian philosophy of believing that what some one does with his/her own body is no business of mine. Cruises put us all in contact with people from different cultures. That guy over there wearing blue jeans? He just might be a Texas oil tycoon. Don't get into a "check writing" contest with him! Same with that guy with the tattoos.

Default The problem comes in...

a little later in life....
The 19 year old that got a tattoo on his neck and now cannot get a "white collar" job because the hiring company is not impressed. The young lady that thought the wrist band tattoe was "cute" and now is having a problem breaking into a professional company, etc.

The Plastic Surgery business is booming with folks looking to get rid of tattoos. And the cost start at around $4,000!!!!!

I think they are just silly. Like the mullet, the silly little goatee that some guys still think looks cool or sexy, biker shorts, bell bottoms, leisure suits, ect... The difference is you can get a haircut, a shave and change your clothes. You can even remove piercings and just have a hint of the hole. It is like monkey see, monkey do but when the novelty wears off and it is no longer in style, you are stuck with it. Think of having a permanent mullet or a goatee that you can't shave off.

Most people I see with tattoos would be better off spending the money on a gym membership. It would do a lot more for the way they look.

Afterall...

Dave,
Trust me, looking good is NOT better than feeling good. Just wait until you age a bit more.
And, while I was brought up in a very conservative family in a very conservative city, I have had to revise my opinion of tattoo's, and piercings. I worked for large corporations for 25 years and nowadays, unless you are covered in tat's and rings dangling everywhere, no one cares anymore. Right or wrong, times have changed.

Marty, some of what I say has to be taken with a grain of salt. The quote I referred to is from Saturday Night Live when Billy Crystal used to say,

"it is better to look good than to feel good and you look mahvelous"

In my company, the guys like me that wear long sleeves and a tie, don't have tattoos but the blue collar guys that make less and wear short sleeves and shorts, have all the tattoos. I don't where they get the extra money.

PS I see we are neighbors.

Dave,

Sorry that my tongue in cheek smiley face didn't come through!

And, yes, we're neighbors...almost. We're in Dunedin. I don't put that on my profile because hardly anyone knows where it is or even how to say it. I keep telling people it is NOT pronounced to mean really noisy sand piles!

Dave the Wave,

You talk like tattoos are a recent fad. If you believe this, you couldn't be more wrong. Tattooing was first prevelent over 5000 years ago, used by the Pazyryk Culture near ancient Russia. It spread to Egypt where only priest were allowed tattoos as symbols of piety. The Japanese perfected the art in 297 AD where it was used by Samurai Warriors as badges of rank and Ghesia Girls (maybe it is a tramp stamp). Tattoing was seen in early cultures in China, Polynesia, Greece, Rome and England by the Celts. Even the vikings used tattooing as symbols of male virility and battle prowess. The only other habit people have been partaking of for as long is the brewing of beer. Tattooing has been around long before you and I were out of diapers and will be here long after all of us are dead and buried. In comparison, cruiseing, television and automobiles are recent fads.
