Default WHERE DO THEY COME UP WITH THE NAMES?

OK, this really isn't a gripe but just an observation with a little chuckle thrown in.

How do the cruise lines come up with names for their ships? Specifically I just returned from a cruise onboard the new Celebrity Solstice and in hearing the other names of the upcoming Solstice class of ships, Equinox, and Eclipse, I had to chuckle!

Solstice - Pontiac just introduced this car in 2004

Equinox - Chevrolet just introduced this small SUV in 2004

Eclipse - OK, this has been around awhile, the Mitubishi Eclipse, 1989.

So anyway, what gives, it made me chuckle, especially when the first two names chosen matched exactly and in the same order of introduction as 2 GM vehicles 4 years before!!!

It's probably happening during a meeting on Friday afternoons. Tired and lazy after a long week, anxious to get to the bar-hopping Friday night, thinking no one will notice anyway. But you did! Good for you. They should start naming these ships after women, like the fishing boats. It could be fun.

It came to me on the cruise and made me laugh. I remember watching the Apprentice with Donald Trump and the big deal made on the show about the upcoming Pontiac Solstice!

wow, that is funny. on another site, i suggested a ship called the 'corn of the seas,' or the 'norwegian corn' to a post that proffered a 'corn-belt' theme cruise! almost got banned, i guess, for that. sounds stonehenge-related to me -- there was a recent ngraphic tv presentation of excavating the place. i'm waiting for the 'druid of the seas,' the "norwegian 'carthage', or the 'pyramid' or the 'sea sphinx.' or untimately, the 'carnival nostradamus.' or how about the 'ms mary magdelena."

or the 'isis', or the 'ramesis II' oh, heavens, it could go on an on -- no end in sight. get ready.

ok, a challenge. let's rename the deutchland the 'no problem of the seas,' and sail it to the coast of somalia. machine guns for all guests, and a required seminar on how to use them. smokers patrol the outside decks; nonsmokers keep lookout inside. all passengers are dressed in orange vests, like hunters, to militate against accidents. shot pirates bring a free cruise and dinner at the upscale restaurant. let 'mack the knife' sung by sinatra be the cruise theme song. and let the boutique sell flack jackets as a memento. oh, what an idea, eh? well, you dared me.

I'm waiting for RCI to build a ship bigger than the Oasis and they can call it the Goliath of the Seas, or Paul Bunyon of the Seas

I have a name that Farcus can use for the next ship--Carnival Flirtation, or Carnival PMS, perhaps Carnival Exhiliration.......

hey, cc, it is an adventure cruise; no more predictable stuff like lido buffets and bland entertainment in the lounge. and formal nights -- how about flack jacket nights? no 'cigars under the stars,' but uzis under the stairs. awful, isn't it, but just as awful is what we are about to see with the cutdowns in service and amenities and food when the new low prices take effect. bed rolls, anyone?

I have actually seen uzi's or comparable on cruises, but it was always in ports. The worst was one of our visits to Isle de Margueriete (sp?) off the coast of Venezuela. The presidents of all the South American countries were having a big meeting on the island and you couldn't turn around without bumping into a military man. I still went and did my thing, because I love that port. Glad that I did, since it is off limits now.

The scariest was a cruise right after 9/11 when there was a heavy military presence at our home port. Plus a special escort until they felt we were far enough out to sea to minimize chances of an attack.

Man, how did we get from jokes to this? Sorry, everyone, it's all hombre's fault, since he started me down this train of thought.
