Lightbulb Planning a Cruise Horror Stories

What's been the #1 most frustrating part of planning your cruise online?

I've been very frustrated and would like hear about your pain points in planning your last trip.

1) What happened?
2) Last time this happened
3) What would you change?

After being in the business for 13 years, having over 1400 clients worldwide, being on 47 cruise on 11 different cruise lines around the world, I would NEVER recommend booking online!

This is especially true for first-timers who have alot of questions.

There was some research done and it found that when booking online or directly through the cruise line, the people you're dealing with; 1) work in a call center, 2) are not a certified travel agent, 3) have worked in the industry for less than 6 months, and 4) have never been on a cruise or to any of the ports. They are there to sell you something, not to provide any service, answer any questions, or help you with all the many details.

Since reputable agents do not charge any fees and can often find better rates, plus they've often been on the cruise line, ship, and/or to the ports, their expertise can be invaluable.

Lastly, if you have any problems, your agent can be of tremendous help in resolving the issue as they have contacts not available to you.

I have to agree with Pete, so your research on ships and ports you want to visit and times that work for you. Then I would contact a good cruise travel agent and let them take over, very worth it.

Same here, research on-line, get offers by email, then phone our preferred TA & book through them. They always manage to match or beat any on-line or mailshot offer

No horror stories, other than trying to align with friends

One of my biggest frustrations getting a good deal on a cruise and airfare at the same time. Our r/t air to south florida can swing $200/pp from week to week.

Ok, so I haven't booked online yet either, but why aren't you for it? What is it that your TA does for you that you can't online?

...I do everything online pretty much

Okay, so you book online and have a problem. Who are you going to call? Are they even open when you need them the most? And do you think they're really interested in helping you? They deal in quantity, not quality.

I could relate horror stories that have been told to me by people who booked online and swore they would never do it again.

With the prices the same, why wouldn't you want to establish a working relationship with someone who cares about you and wants to work hard for you so they gain your trust and your repeat business?

Besides, keep in mind that when you're working with an agent, you're helping to support a small business who uses their income to support their family and pay their taxes. They're not a big business who uses their income to buy a Ferrari or expensive yacht and avoid taxes.
