Has anyone gone to China with Viking Cruises. I believe this is new on their itinerary and am looking for some feedback. Some of the messages on this board have made me a little cautious about this Cruis line. Would appreciate any help. Thanks, Dag
According to Viking's 2004 China Yangtze River Cruise Journeys brochure, the first sailing of their new ship the Century Star will start on March 13 from Chongqing.
I have a reservation on the ship's fourth trip from Wuhan on April 3. This will be my third cruise with Viking, the first in 2002 from Amsterdam to Vienna, the other their Tulips and Windmills cruise last year. My experience with Viking River Cruises couldn't have been better.
I'll be glad to share observations of their China product on my return in mid April.
Viking's inaugural sailing along the Yangtze embarks on March 13th. As soon as Schmabbie (sp?) returns, I hope she will tell us all about it. She's a regular contributor, and she tells it like it is!
Century Star is brand new. Staterooms range from 172 sq. ft. to over 500 sq. ft.; each has a veranda. Viking is offering a choice of five itineraries. You can choose a9-day, a 12-day, or any of three 16-day voyages--each one with a landtour on both sides of a 7-day Yangtze cruise. I think I read that Viking is the only line that offers seven days on the Yangtze; most other lines offer only five. I can't wait to take the Imperial Treasures of China or the Ancient Kingdom of Siam cruisetours...but that won't be until March or April, 2005.
At your request, I'd be happy to share my journal of my first Viking cruise--a 7-night journey through Provence. I can attach it to an email. Although the cruise was on a different riverboat--MS Burgundy--the journal will give you a pretty good overview of Viking's mode of operation.
My friend and I are going June 24th for a 12 day Imperial Treasures of China, Beijing to Shanghai. We are excited and looking forward to some feedback also on trip. Century Star I believe. When are you going?
We are planning on the Yantzee cruise in Aug/Sept. and would love to read any reviews available. We have taken one other Viking cruise and were very happy but the China trip with cruise/hotels/flights etc. might be really different. I am unable to find your review with the address in the message. Please direct me to the site--Thank You,

We are going on the Viking River Century Star in China at the end of November so I have no clue about that trip with the exception of the two reviews that I read.
BUT, we did go on the Viking River Cruises Pakhomov from Moscow to St. Petersburg in May 2003 and thought it was FABULOUS. I read the review by someone in "Cruise Addicts" and I am not sure what the problem was unless the person thought she was going on a Carnival Cruise or a Princess, etc. There is no television and no "entertainment" and no casino, but they took us to the Russian Ballet, to the Hermitage, to the Moscow Circus, etc. etc, etc. It was absolutely wonderful.
Our experience with Viking River Cruises was very memorable with the staff more than willing to accomodate us and our guide Valera being absolutely exceptional. I must admit that the food on board was not 5 star, but they always would make you a chicken breast and vegetables if you didn't like the entrees. We didn't go on this for the food. We went to see a different culture and learn about a place that we had never been. I wouldn't do this kind of cruise if I were looking for food or entertainment or people who speak perfect English. If I wanted all of that, I would stay home or go on one of the "big ships"!!!!
Viking River Cruises had a great trip to Russia and that is why we are choosing to do China with them. Viking River Cruises is a good line to book with as long as you realize that you aren't going on a big cruise ship!
I know several people who have come back from Viking River Cruises' China cruisetours, and everyone raves about them. In fact, I've even booked China for my husband and me for the May 1, 2005, sailing!
