Antwerp to Basel - August, 2005
We recently returned from Treasures of the Rhine (renamed Belgium to Switzerland for 2006 sailings). Viking's newest riverboat, Viking Sun, is beautiful! The dining room, lounge, and library are much larger on the Sun than on Viking's other vessels. We had heard reports of high waters and riverboats being unable to get under bridges, but we had no problems at all with river levels. The weather was fantastic--mid to high 70's, and not a single day of rain!
We really enjoyed the Antwerp-to-Basel itinerary! The cruise along the Rhine and Moselle rivers is so picturesque! And the ports of call are very beautiful and interesting. This was our 3rd visit to Amsterdam and Rudesheim, but we still had new experiences in both. In Rudesheim, in addition to seeing the delightful music museum again, we finally got to take the tram to the top of the mountain, and I highly recommend it--simply magnificent views and vistas! The tram glides along over acres and acres of grape arbors--just weeks from the harvest season. In Amsterdam, in addition to the "tried and true" Rijksmuseum, we found our way to the Jewish Museum, and it is a must for anyone interested in sights of Jewish interest.
We loved Delft, too. The porcelain museum is beautiful! It was interesting to see the process of creating beautiful pieces from beginning to end, and especially to compare it to the seemingly more primitive way it is done in China.
In Arnhem, we oohed and aahed over the Paleis Het Loo, especially its fabulous gardens. In Cologne, the magnificent Gothic cathedral, was the center of attention.
The journey into the Black Forest is breathtakingly beautiful. Strasbourg, in Alsace-Lorraine, is simply lovely! I could go on and on!
