We are booked on the China trip leaving 4/21/06 and trying to pack light.
Viking Faxed me the laundry price list and it appears to be out of sight.
Shorts-laundry & press 25, shirt-35, T-shirt-25 are examples. I called and
asked what currency these prices are and was told US Dollars. Has anyone
been on this ship or the Viking Century Star and used the laundry. Are these
prices for real?
We were on the Star last September and my recollection is that the prices you quote are correct, only they are in cents and not dollars! We had quite a bit of laundry done and it was only a few dollars. They pick up the items in the morning and they are returned to your cabin the same evening. Also, they did a fine job on them.
I believe that the Sun is the same design as the Star and I can assure you that you will enjoy every moment on board.
I just returned from the Viking River Cruise Cultural Delights April 29 cruisetour on the Viking Century Sun. To clear up the laundry issue, the prices are in Chinese Yuan (or Renminbi). So an item listed at 25 is about $3.27 and an item listed at 35 is about $4.58 (using an exchange rate of 7.65 Yuan to the U.S. Dollar). So yes, laundry aboard ship is pricey. The suggestion to pack everything you need is problematic given the the weight restrictions on the 2 intra-China flights (between Beijing and Xian and Xian and Chingqing) of one checked bag per person with about a 44 pound limit!
An alternative to laundry is to bring hand washable items that can dry in the bathroom on the ship.
