Default Christmas Markets

I just booked my first Christmas Markets on Viking for next year. This year is booked already. I can't wait for a new experience....

We're doing them on a land trip this year for the first time. Munich, Salzburg and Vienna. Can't wait!

We had booked one on the Uniworld SS Antoinette and just a couple of hours before we were to fly out on our 2-week cruisetour, our son developed chest pains and we had to rush him to the hospital. Luckily, it turned out it was nothing life threatening, but he had to have his gallbladder removed (and he was only 28!). But we were so looking forward to the Christmas market cruise visiting some wonderful little towns. Hopefully, we'll get to do that again in the near future.

As it turned out, we were glad we missed the cruise because they ended up not having enough water runoff from the mountains and the water level was so low that in some towns they could not dock. They had to dock upriver or downriver and then bus everyone into the town. In some areas, the boats that were upriver couldn't go downriver and those that were downriver couldn't go upriver. So they had to disembark the passengers and switch boats!

By contrast, last year they had so much water, it had the opposite affect. The water was so high that boats could not go under some of the bridges.

That's the one bad thing about river cruising - it is very dependent on the water levels, which is reliant on rain, snow, and runoff from the mountains.

But after having done river cruising, we are so hooked! Although I much prefer other lines to Viking, I can't wait to go again, so I'm very jealous.

Sounds just wonderful, which towns will you be visiting along the way - or is it too early to have that conrfirmed?
The Markets are simply amazing, the atmosphere, the hustle & bustle and oh the aroma of Glühwein & hot snacks :o)

Color me jealous !!

Alan.

Wow, that's a great itinerary, with some stunning scenery en route. I'm glad you are taking the opportunity to spend some time in Münich, it is one of my favoutire cities. Make sure you catch the clock chiming in the TownHall (Rathaus) in Marienplatz - the reason I highlightit is that I think it stil only strikes at 11am, 12noon & 5pm - so timing is important. Tourist Info will be able to confirm if this is still the case.
Nuremberg, Heidelburg and Frankfurt are also wonderful towns to wander around with lots of 'old world' streets and areas.
One other must do, if you enjoy beer, is to take a Weissbier - it is a cloudy wheat beer which for some reason most people detect a hint of banana flavour !! don't ask me why, but it's true, but beware they are rather moorish, until you try & stand up again ;o)

You lucky, lucky, lucky thing.

Alan
