Gallery: Pride of Aloha
by: Paul Motter

Pride of Aloha: NCL America. May 15 voyage 7-days round-trip honolulu. Look for accompanying article on the ship written by Paul Motter. This is the largest U.S.-flagged and crewed ship ever. In the beginning it had some staffing problems for food and service. Happily, these are largely resolved. Here is a good cross-section of the entire experience.

Pride of Aloha's painted bow, docked in Maui

Welcome aboard barbeque on deck to feed all the hungry passengers. The ship does not sail until 8:00

Onboard museum of Hawaii with many exhibits and a diffent video presentation daily

more of the museum

Is there shopping on board? you bet.

First breakfast buffet - are the busboys lazy? possibly

Wake up sleepy-head, it's time to work

Not everyone was lazy- We loved this gal who awoke a 3:30 am every day to prepare her waffles

Salty Maui rains require industrial window washing

First stop, Kauai, the Garden Isle

This reef teemed with live sea turtles swimming within feet of us - Kauai

wetsuits, showers & snacks are included in the snorkel tour. nice touch

Pleasantly surprised at food quality. Lobster entree in the "free" main dining room

followed by chocolate dessert

open seating "free-style" dining line. Never waited over 5 minutes

Friendly US dining room staff welcome us

Surprised by free wine tasting outside "free" main dining room. Nice touch

Local Polynessian show outshined the JAR dancers on this ship

Local in Polynesian costume doing traditional dance

another picture of her, why not?

Polynesian warrior - yes, they were a violent people

and colorful. too

Kauai blowhole in the morning mist

First look at Waimea Canyon - the Grand Canyon of the Pacific

atop Waimea Canyon, over 3000 feet deep

The beautiful Na Pali Coastline. The only time the ships sails in daytime to see this coast of Kauai

Big Island Volcano - I decide to hike to the lava

The marked trail ends too quickly - now its moonscape

rope keep you away from the beach - the lava cliffs can collapse any time

I decided to follow the rope, bad idea, suddenly this view occured

I was too close to the water, so I turned inland

air getting hotter, rock more mangled, I am close now

the steam of hot lava hitting the water cloud my way

hot burnholes give a peek to the hot Hell below

I can see the spot where the lava enters the sea

wanting to see flowing lava I approach a burn hole

alas, I dare not get any closer than this, the ground cracks like glass under my feet.
