Culebra, Puerto Rico, more commonly known as the Culebra Port, is the entrance to the Spanish Virgin Islands. The city is a popular tourist destination because of its white sandy beaches and ideal natural surroundings. With temperatures remaining between 70 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit year round, this destination is one worth visiting at any time.

Shopping

Most people come to the Culebra cruise port just to spend some time doing nothing, since it is peaceful and relaxing. However, the port offers a good number of local artisans and shops. The On Island Boutique is a great choice for those looking for local souvenirs. Fine Woodwork by Paul is also a good place to stop, especially if you want something personalized. There are several dive or scuba shops including Culebra Divers and the Culebra Dive Shop, with everything you need to snorkel, surf or just play in the water.

Things to Do

At the Culebra port of call, there are local boat rentals and charters are available right at the port. Island Cruiser Power Boats or the Guilin's Water Taxi are good places to start. You can rent or take a trip on a small motor boat, a sailboat or kayaks.

For beaches, try Luis Pena and the Culebrita. These are smaller beaches with an intimate feel. Both are clean and good for the family. There are also several reefs located here. If you snorkel or want to learn how, make this part of your day. The Culebra Port also offers:

  • Yoga classes on the beach.
  • Relaxing massages in the center of town.
  • Fishing for bonefish or deep-sea fishing for sailfish, kingfish and tuna.
  • Nature tours to find fish, turtles, gulls and pelicans. Some of the boating outfits offer eco tours.

Many people will simply find that walking through the Culebra cruise terminal and main downtown region will give them plenty to do and see.

Restaurants and Bars

Some of the best cuisine will come right from the numerous kiosks located near the Culebra Port. The papayas, mangos and guineas available here are fresh and enticing. For fine dining, try Juanita Banalas, Bahia Marina or the Costa Bonita Resort restaurants. Each of these offers unique, local cuisines. Vegetarian dishes are quite unique. You will also find sushi, Caribbean specialties and some of the best espresso you have ever sipped. For espresso, visit the Café Isola. Mamacita's Bar and Restaurant is an inexpensive option as is the Dinghy Dock Restaurants.

The Culebra Port offers a genuine taste of Puerto Rico and the surrounding area. It can be a bit expensive, especially because it continues to grow in popularity among tourists and those looking for relaxation in the sun.
