The Grenadines Port, located in the Grenadines Islands of the Caribbean, and part of the St Vincent region, is the entrance to some 32 islands located in the Windward Islands. The island nation stretches more than 40 miles. Private residents own most of it. The port is informal and dates back to the 18th century. Most of the docking is for small boats that move from island to island. Though an informal port, you can expect a welcoming atmosphere and an interesting visit. The locals are fantastic and will be happy to help you to find what you are looking for.

The ships come in and dock off Kingstown, in St. Vincent's. You can rent a boat to visit any of the other islands that are open to the public.

Shopping

Although there are a few local shops located in Kingstown, there is not a lot of shopping here. If you visit the Bequia and Mayreau islands, part of the Grenadines, you will find a number of small shops, mostly artisan. Woodcarvings, unique native drawings and paintings and souvenirs are available. One of the nice things about these small shops is that they cater to special needs, such as creating a specialized portrait for you.

Wander through the streets in St Vincent for local shops. Also, get to the wharf as early as possible, if you can. There, you will find some of the best shopping from the local handicrafts that are sold right along the walkway. You will find some additional stores located at Port Elisabeth, including international brand name clothing and perfumes.

Things to Do

There are several things to do at the Grenadines cruise terminal. Visit the rain forests located at St. Vincent's. Eco tourism tours are available through many of the local rental companies at the port. The Kingstown Market is worth a visit on Fridays and Saturdays. Many of the city's churches and older buildings are available to tour. Some date back to the 18th century. The Botanical Gardens is located about a ten-minute walk from the center of town. Scuba diving, beaches and water sports like snorkeling are available.

Restaurants and Bars

When it comes to eating, it is highly recommended that you consider local fare offered by any of the numerous stands and vendors along the wharf and within St. Vincent's walkways. Another option is Maria's French Terrace. Here, you will find outstanding seafood, French favorites and local cuisine. Expect to spend some time and money here. Port Sammo Restaurant and Bar right at the Grenadines cruise port offers fine dining. You can also try the local seafood dishes, including the lobster. They also offer barbecue chicken, tuna and steak and all food is located right on the waterfront.

The Grenadines Port offers visitors a rare glimpse at luxury Caribbean life either from the cruise ship or by wandering the local streets.
