The Labadee Port located in Labadee, Hispaniola, or Haiti, is a French and Creole cultural city. The city has a large number of English speaking visitors, so you should have no problem getting around. Hispaniola is the original name of the island, which encompasses both the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
It is important to note that you do not have admission into the island beyond the Labadee Port. Haiti's political unrest has made it difficult for the cruise lines to secure the safety of their passengers, therefore you will be able to visit only the portion of the island that has been safeguarded.
Shopping
The Labadee cruise port shopping is a cultural experience. The Haitian Marketplace is located right off the Labadee port of call. Here, you will find local art pieces such as paintings and carved sculptures. Also, the coffee and cognac here are very popular and are said to be some of the best in the world. There is also an Artisan's Market located right off the Labadee cruise terminal that is an outdoor market area that lines the street. You will find pottery, jewelry, fun woodcarvings and toys for the kids.
Things to Do
You can also visit any of the five beaches that feature white sand and palm trees. Consider a kayaking tour. It will take you to a nearby Haitian fishing village. Parasailing is also a big excursion here. If you are lucky enough to have an English speaking tour guide, you should ask questions about the mountains, culture and the political atmosphere in the country because they are a great source of information.
Some must do's here include:
- Snorkeling at Amiga Island located right off the Labadee Port.
- A visit to Hideaway Beach: if you are luckily enough, you may find some 16th century artifacts here.
- Rent some jet skis from the local Jet Ski tour guides.
Restaurants and Bars
Perhaps the best restaurant you will find at Labadee Port is Dragon's Rock Café. Here, you will encounter some of the best barbeque you have ever had, all cooked and served in an open air building. For something to drink, you will find small bars throughout the city.
The Labadee Port offers something for every visitor; including hammocks for those who do not want to do anything but relax. It is also important to note that the city is often in the direct line of hurricanes, however, there is plenty of warnings available and the people of Haiti are well prepared to handle it.
