The San Juan Port is the central location for the majority of Eastern and Southern Caribbean itineraries. There are two possible docks within the San Juan area, but tourists tend to prefer the location within walking distance from the historic Old San Juan. The other dock is just across the bay, but requires a taxi to get anywhere around the city of San Juan.

3. What's the cruise port parking like?

The Port of San Juan does not provide public parking. There are many public lots surrounding the port where cruise passengers can leave their cars during their voyages. However, the narrow streets do not lend themselves well to drivers, and most passengers are advised to skip the car rental and use taxis or walk to their destinations.

4. How do you get to the cruise port?

The best way to get to the port is by taxi, which costs about $20 to take from the airport directly to the cruise terminal. Taxis are also available from the various hotels in the area.

Shopping in Old San Juan is one of the most popular attractions for cruisers, and most of the shops are within walking distance. Wear comfortable walking shoes that can navigate the cobbled streets of this historic city.

The newly refurbished El Covento Hotel offers a galleria of high-end shops like Calvin Klein and Alessi.

The Bacardi Rum Factory requires a ferry ride from the cruise ship dock, but the ride is inexpensive and the tour is well worth the time. Most of the beaches in this area are at least a 10 minute taxi ride away.

Sheraton Old San Juan (formerly Wyndham's) is the closest accommodations to the cruise terminals and boasts some unique rooms inside its aging walls. Hotel El Covento offers some of the finest accommodations and excellent shopping in its galleria.

9. What restaurants are near the cruise port?

San Juan is definitely a place to sample some of the local cuisine, whether it is La Bombonera for a Cubano sandwich or Parrot Club for nuevo Latin fare.

10. Are ships docked at the port, or are passengers ferried from the port to the ship?

Passengers directly enter the ship from the Port of San Juan. No ferry service is required.
