Road Town on the island of Tortola is the political and commercial capital of the British Virgin Islands and has one of the Caribbean's major ports. Road Town has many boutique shops and local art galleries.
Concentrated on the western side of Road Bay, Road Town is a perfect jumping-off point for excursions to snorkeling and dive sports or nearby islands. Famous for its rum distillery and vibrant music scene, Cane Garden Bay is located on the north side of Tortola, within sight of Jost van Dyck.
Cruise ships dock in Road Town's Government Pier, or anchor in the harbor. Smaller ships can dock at the Road Town Jetty or on Tortola's West End area, near the ferry to St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Shopping
Road Town's shopping district, Main Street, winds through the western side of town, a block back from the cruise ship dock on Waterfront Drive. You'll find paintings and prints by local artists and a dazzling array of West Indian spices and recipes- often with the chef herself nearby to answer questions.
The Virgin Islands have been producing rum for centuries and visitors can purchase a wide variety at shops along Main Street or the supply stores in the island's marinas. Pusser's supplied the Royal Navy with its daily rum allowance for three centuries and has stores on Waterfront Drive and in the West End.
Things to See
The natural beauty of Tortola draws visitors from around the world, more than a few stay to become residents! The island is ringed with coves, most with wide sand beaches ready-made for snorkeling. For visitors seeking a daily beach party, Cane Garden Bay is the home of several local musicians and many of the beach bars have stages for impromptu concerts. The West End area is perfect for anyone looking to relax with a view of sailboats and quiet coves. The rock formation known as the "Devil's Marbles" on nearby Virgin Gorda is popular with visitors and locals alike; if you decide to go to Virgin Gorda, book the trip through your ship's excursion desk to ensure your stay isn't longer than you planned!
Restaurants and Bars
Concentrated on the western side of Road Bay, Road Town has a variety of restaurants and bars that cater to maritime visitors, from upscale seafood to laid back West Indian calypso.
