The Amsterdam port, located in Amsterdam, Holland, is a large city. Many ask if this is in The Netherlands or Holland. This part of the country, where Amsterdam is located, is a part of the Holland region. Outside this center portion, the rest of the country officially goes by The Netherlands. There is plenty to do here for visitors. From the Amsterdam port of call, you will notice the huge commercial ports and the downtown region of the city. While the city is large and ever expanding, it is important to note that Amsterdam is still a natural escape offering an often preserved natural setting.

Shopping

Once you enter the Amsterdam cruise terminal, you will find shops located throughout the city. The city is known for its diamonds, and curiously its books. Most shops are only open for a few hours during the day, though most shops stay open late on Thursdays. There are no cars permitted in the main shopping center. Perhaps the largest area for shopping is Nieuwedijk to Kalverstraat. This tourist area is home to a large assortment of shops. Most are high-end luxury items such as clothing but you will find gift shops located here as well.

On the other portion of the square, in the Kalverstraat region, there are additional shops, including card shops, perfume shops, clothing, shoes, bags and artisan shops offering everything from paintings to homemade treats. Other areas to visit include Damrak and Rokin, which run parallel to the previous shopping area, though this is a busy street. The Flowermarket is a must shop destination located at the end of the Klverstraat area. You can take these bulbs home with you.

Things to Do

Besides shopping, museums seem to be a large draw in the Amsterdam port area. You will find the Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum and the Stedelijk Museum. Many are in old, stately buildings that are ever imposing.

Another place to visit is the Dam Square. This is the heart of the city; though many would not say it is a beautiful site. Many historical events took place here, including a reception for Napoleon and his troops when they took over the city in 1808. Visit Begijnhof, which is a garden that is dotted with small, but older homes. Some of them allow you to visit. There is also a medieval church in this area. No. 34, is the oldest house located in the city. Though you can enter without charge to this region, you do need to keep quiet.

Restaurants and Bars

Up and down any of the shopping area streets of Amsterdam port, you will find numerous places to stop in for something to eat. A good place for local cuisine is Restaurant Bordewijk, which serves an assortment of meals. The sea bass is outstanding and definitely save room for a dessert cheese selection. Another option is Restaurant Vinkeles Amsterdam, a popular choice for an elegant meal. This top of the line restaurant offers foods such as ceviche of sea bass, king crab with a vinaigrette of orange and roast Anjou pigeon, just to name a few.
