A picturesque city in the Turkish region of the Black Sea, Sinop Port provides rich culture and excellent views to its visitors. Located in the ancient region of Paphlagonia, the city is home to 47,000 people. Sinop, which is known historically as Sinope is the capital of the Sinop Province. Historians say that the city was founded in the 7th century BC by Miletion colonists. Sinop is also known as the birthplace of Diogenes, the famous cynic philosopher. Tourists can spend a day in the city wandering around the charming town as they check out the scenic seafront and many restaurants throughout the area.
Things to do
Sinop offers many places of historical interests as well as a wide variety of parks, restaurants and even camping facilities. Some of the key tourist spots in the city include the Alaiye Medresse, the 13th century Alaeddin Mosque, and the Balatlar Church. Some of the most interesting things the city has to offer are the many unique artifacts which include traditional wood carvings, crystal and cotton clothes. Sinop is also home to several fine sandy beaches. The best beach is probably located in Gerze; about 40 kilometers south of the city.
The city also has many restaurants, parks and meadows. You may also want to hike the large forest sloping to the sea at the Camgolu where camping facilities are available. Another place of interest is Boyabat, which is the largest town of the province. Visitors will be able to find many rock tombs and a citadel in the area.
If you want to learn more about the history of the city’s civilization, head over to the City Museum. In fact, according to some archaeologists, some of the country may have been flooded during the biblical flood as indicated by evidence found in the sea off Sinop. You can also visit Hamsilos Fjord, the only fjord in all of Turkey, located 11 kilometers from Sinop.
Restaurants and bars
Sinop has a wide variety of dining places which serve a wide variety of dishes including popular Turkish cuisines. For a fresh loaf of Ekmek, popular local sourdough bread, you can head over to one of the local bakeries. This local pastry is usually served hot together with honey, butter and a warm cup of tea. Along the harbor, visitors will be able to find several informal al fresco cafes which serve fresh fish dishes. If you are looking for nice drinks and a good night life, head over to the café/bar which used to be a fortified tower. The place is perfect to get a drink and have a nice party.
Shopping
Head over to the market and buy traditional wood carvings, crystal and original clothes made of cotton. These local items make as great souvenirs.
Getting around
Visitors can easily navigate much of the city’s points of interest by foot. You can also ride public buses and taxis. If you rent a vehicle, you will not have a difficult time when it comes to parking.
