The Tromso Port is referred to by many as the gateway to the Artic region- and for good reasons. It is the entry point to Tromso, the largest city in the Artic circle and a booming university town. The main pedestrian street in Tromso, Storgata, is dotted with numerous shops selling different domestic and foreign products. Most visitors will not leave Tromso without having a painting from any of the many galleries found in the city, or a handmade garment, or fancy pendant, or an Artic food item such as a reindeer sausage.

Tourists who love shopping will surely find the Husfliden their haven. Husfliden has about 30 stores in Norway, and it has one in Tromso located across the Radisson SAS hotel. Husfliden is particularly noted for its excellent line of good quality bunads, the national costume of Norway.

The Tromso branch of Husfliden specializes in the selling of bunads from the Nordland county.

Husfliden is also home to gift items, handicrafts, jewelry, and knitting yarn. There is a wide range of knitting yarn available in the Tromso branch of Husfliden which should make weaving and crocheting lovers smile. Husfliden also sells good quality sweaters and scarves, among other types of Norwegian clothing items.

For those who would like to shop for souvenirs, the Tromsø Gift and Souvenir Shop is the place to go to.

Things to See

Tourists will be familiar with the Polar Museum, which serves as the starting point for most Arctic expeditions. Meanwhile, the Polaria gathers seals and fishes native in the Arctic region while providing a multimedia presentation on Svalbard’s history and culture. Visitors should also spend some time at the Art Museum which features artworks from the Northern Norwegian region.

The most popular structure in the city is the Arctic Cathedral which features a flaming glass mosaic. Tourists should also try the cab car that rises approximately 420 meters above the sea level and which offers a breathtaking view of the city.

Restaurants and Bar

Going out is part of the lifestyle of residents of Tromso. Residents usually go out, spend a hearty meal over laughter and talk at any of the cafes around Storgata. Among the more reputable restaurants in Tromso is the Astro located at the heart of the city. This restaurant serves lunch and light meals a la carte.

For the best cakes in Tromso, tourists should drop by the Aunegarden. The Ban Thai, meanwhile, offers a great taste of Thai cooking.

For those who want to spend time in a café, the Skaidi is a hot and trendy place located right at the lower levels of the SAS Hotel.
